I noticed that Jagged Alliance 2 is on sale again at GoG.com (€5, this weekend only) so I thought I'd make a thread about this.

I bought this game last year. I've never played it until then but I heard good things about it so I thought I'd try it out. It's a great game, highly tactical. I love it. And that's coming from someone who isn't a fan of turn-based gameplay.

It basically goes like this: you are the commander of a group of mercenaries. You have to hire these mercenaries yourself. You can choose from a large number of mercenaries who have different stats and talents. There are mercenaries that are very strong, others are great marksmen or talented lock pickers, etc. A man hires you to assassinate Queen Diadranna, a tyrant in the fictional African country of Arulco.

You begin the game with a sum of money, which you can use to hire a team of mercenaries. You are then dropped into the north of Arulco, and the game basically says: "Go nuts". You're free to do anything you want; you can capture villages and mining facilities for extra profit, train militias or you can go straight after Diadranna. It's entirely up to you.

Now, the great thing about this game is that there is a fan-made patch called 1.13. Actually, it's more like a big mod because it adds a ****load of weapons and gear (and by ****load I mean hundreds of them, no kidding). Really, this mod is awesome and if you play JA2 you should play it with 1.13. Before installing it you should first familiarize yourself with the vanilla part of the game though, as 1.13 doesn't show the intro cutscene and it ramps up the difficulty level. Then restart the campaign with 1.13.

Combat is turn-based, everything else is real-time. Gameplay can be described as a sort of turn-based Commandos mixed with a Total War-style freedom to roam the campaign map and some RPG elements. Ammo can be scarce so you might want your mercenaries to use weapons that use the same caliber. You have to make a lot of tactical choices like that. The graphics are dated of course but still look fine. After a while you'll get used to them. Also works with widescreen.

If you love tactical gameplay and high replay factor, then Jagged Alliance 2 with 1.13 is an excellent choice.

Old screenshot I made, showing my team of mercenaries and the weapons I gave them; FN FAL with scope, Groza, an AK variant, SVD, M14 and HK416/417 (forgot which one, haven't played it in a while). All 1.13 weapons. Capturing a SAM site. The screenshots don't really do the game justice, the graphics actually look a bit better than that.

Great game, highly recommended.

I like Silent storm (esp Sentinels) better... I just couldn't get over the lack of destructibility in JA2. (even though the whole meta campaign thing is cool). The amount of crap you can blow up in SS is crazy. PLus all the multi floor buildings etc. add a lot to the fun. Nothing like having your dude with an MG blow a hole through the ceiling and then have your scout/ninja crawl through it and kill a baddie above with his katana lol. Then have the rest of your team shoot through the wall to kill anyone they hear approaching to inspect all the noise :D.

And yes PKs suck ;).

@Nox Is Silent Storm kinda authentic or is it more of a game with fantasy guns and units? Because that's what I like about JA2 1.13, everything is quite authentic or even realistic. Well, except for the enemies who all like to wear bright red tank tops that is. :D

What do you mean by PK, by the way?

Hmm, I don't know. I'm on XP, but on my PC the game runs fine.

Too bad they don't make games like this anymore. Well, there's JA3 but I don't know too much about that game. I was actually looking forward to Inna Woods, a turn-based strategy game very similar to JA2 but with more realism, made by a 4chan /k/ poster, but unfortunately that project never got past the planning phase and was canceled. The art he released was impressive though, check it out:

What a shame, it looked so cool. :(

Back to JA2 1.13. I have noticed that 1.13 really doesn't give you a lot of action points even on novice difficulty, but you can change that in Ja2_Options.INI in your Data-1.13 folder. Search for PLAYER_AP_BONUS and change the value to 10 or 15, or something in between. Gives you a bit more freedom of movement.

Here's a 1.13 let's play:

First part shows the intro plus all of the mercenary stuff you have to set up beforehand.

And then the first battle:

Another video by a different user, showing 1.13 also (annotations only, some useful tips):

And here's someone playing a mod called Urban Chaos (haven't played it myself):

As you can see it's still a cool game 12 years after release and mods still come out for it. :)

Hm... mixed I'd say.

First off, SMGs are not nearly as effective as they would be in real life... for balance reasons. They're absolutely deadly at about 10-15 meters or so but are almost useless beyond 50 (I'm kinda guessing on the ranges here because the game does not calculate things based on the metric or imperial system ;))

Rifles are deadly at pretty much all ranges, but take many more action points to fire so usually you're only gonna get off 1 or 2 shots max if you want any kind of accuracy (less accurate shots are cheaper--you can choose how much "effort" you want your character to put into aiming)

Grenades also aren't thrown as far as they would be in real life, again for balance (because they're pretty devastating). That said once you get a character with a really high throwing skill you can chuck stuff pretty far. They ARE different "levels" of grenades (heavier ones, lighter ones) though so the light ones you can throw a decent distance.

PK is Panzerklein. Basically these giant robotic suits. I won't spoil the story (which honestly is nowhere near as good as JA's in Silent Storm, though it's pretty decent in the expansion, Sentinels, which is better in every aspect and actually has MORE missions than the original lol) but these things are definitely not "realistic". They shoot lasers, have automatic grenade launchers, miniguns etc. They come into play late in the campaign though and you CAN choose to not use them at all thoug your opponent still will. But I do know that there is a mod which removes them entirely and replaces them with high level enemy soldiers. So you CAN avoid that aspect of the game.

There is definitely a wide variety of guns though. Pretty much every WW2 gun you can think of is in there (minus AT rifles which I never saw). Lots of variations on each one too.

Anyways it's pretty cheap these days and even if you end up preferring JA2 to it I'm sure you'll enjoy it so I'd go buy it and just use the mod to avoid the PKs if you so desire. (they're not just unrealistic but they take a lot of the fun out of the game IMO because they can basically just shred the entire landscape eliminating the need for stealth or "careful" destruction ;))

Buy the expansion too, it's even better than the original and has a more solid story as well as a lot of gameplay improvements.

Check out some videos on youtube they'll give you a better idea on the gameplay. Like I said the environment destructibility is a HUUUUGE plus IMO. The AI's pretty damn good too. It's a very challenging game on the highest difficulty.

I've had so many crazy things happen as a result of the environment it's not even funny :D.

Anyways, some new vids on a new JA game. Make of it what you will. The R6 style gameplay looks interesting, but I'm still super skeptical ;):

Reaper, Len and Shadow. Good men. Ira is better for pumping out militias than actual fighting though. If you ever want to open up another squad hire the Dolvichs, you won't regret it. If you're ever looking for a sniper/spotter team check Scope and Sidney.

Thanks, SS sounds pretty interesting. I'll see if I can find a copy somewhere.

And yeah, part of JA3 looks pretty good but I'm still skeptical as well. We'll see what they come up with.

I'm not sceptical at all (well, at least concerning the real time "tactical" mode...) It looks like the system of the Brigade series, which is so nice gampleywise, even with all the bugs, that if you're used to it, you just can't go back to ordinary turn based games.

So I'm actually quite hyped for this, especially since JA2 is the game I played through the most. I think about two dozen times.

And SS/SS:S I do think that they are good games, but as soon as the PKs arrive, I just can't bring myself to go on, as they do break the game. Completely.
And it was even more aggreviating that the devs promised that no PKs would be in Sentinels, as many fans hated them, BUT THEY STILL PUT THEM IN! That totally deserves a capslock. And SS:S is really, really dificult.

But if there finally is a mod to remove all traces of the Panzerkleins (which is a very stupid name, if you're a german speaker. Translates as "Tanklittle"), I might play it again.

IIRC, there also was a game set in berlin in the fifties with the SS engine, but I heard it was quite buggy and not too good. Forgot it's name.

quoted for truth, a true classic, this game had more depth(with 1.13 mod of course) than all the console ports in last 5 years combined

just looking at that 3d real time remake makes you sick

Nice to see JA2 fans here! It truly is an underrated game.

And yeah Apos, you really need to try 1.13. Here is the full list of 1.13 weapons:

http://ja2v113.pbworks.com/w/page/4218356/List-of-Weapons

And this is how they work during combat:

http://ja2v113.pbworks.com/w/page/4218370/Weapon-revision

It even has a lot of guns you usually never see in games. Judging by the weapon list and their descriptions, it's easy to see that this mod was made by a gun nut. One of the reasons why I love 1.13. :D Not only that but it also changes the gameplay and you can customize the hell out of it.

I'm going to continue the campaign.

EDIT: so now I've recruited Shank, Maddog and Dynamo. Anyone got an idea what to do with them? I prefer mercs with good marksman skills. These men are pretty lousy shots. Is it worth it to train them to become better marksmen or should I do something else with them?

Another pic; firefight in the plains. Three mercs, all camouflaged, against a force of 15 enemies.

I like how you get flanked if you don't keep good situational awareness.

@Nimsky, thank you for the links. I've been watching that guy playing JA2 with 1.13 patch and I'm impressed! So many changes, stuff to learn again and new great features. I definitely need to start playing again that classic.

I hope JA3 will be at least in a half as good as this mod.

ps. Suppressive effect, flanking AI, etc really reminds me ArmA 2 :)

Completely valid excuse, good sir.

Yeah, 1.13 really is the ACE of JA2. You wouldn't believe how deep this mod goes. One look at the features page or the item stats guide shows you that the devs thought of pretty much all the details. It looks daunting but it really isn't, that's just how it works under the hood. The game itself works fairly simple.

Bad news though, I installed the new version of the mod, and now my savegames no longer work. :( I still have a backup of the Data-1.13 folder and my savegames are in there, but I have no clue on how to make them work. I tried overwriting the SavedGames folder in the JA2 folder, but that didn't work. Looks like I may have to start over...

Ok, I've installed it, got into action and following a basic tactic of guy from "Lets me watch play JA2" I used spray and pray tactic. Easily take first two cities and start running low on ammo. In time when I was waiting for supplies I started training militia. With first group of militia trained I got attacked by 3 different OPFORs from East, South and West. My team and militia after a very long struggle were killed by outnumbered enemy (1 platoon strength, ~50 infantry mobile).

...i just want to reload savegame, change some tactics and try once again^^!

Yeah, the counter-attack at Drassen, which is enabled by default in v1.13 is pretty epic (and that's should count for something, as I dislike using that adjective).
A nifty tactic for this is to set up your guys in defensive positions inside a house, facing directions where you'll be expecting enemies to be coming from; additionally, train as much militia as you can and - if you still have enough cash to go - consider hiring a few mercs for a one-day contract, or so (I picked this up on Bear's Pit forums).

I had a super-brutal, by-the-skin-of-my-teeth battle - my 8 mercs and 15 militia vs. 65 well-trained goons. Seven mercs walked out alive, 1 militiaman survived by hiding in some hole. Tons of ammunition were captured and Drassen became my supply depot afterwards.

Later, battles in the countryside vs. 12-15 enemies are just... routine by comparison. Alma is the next great and fierce highlight.
-----------------

By the way, anyone got an idea how to remove internal attachments from guns? I'd gladly take off an extended gun barrel or some rod & spring off some captured crapguns and put them on my choice hardware.
