I noticed that Jagged Alliance 2 is on sale again at GoG.com (€5, this weekend only) so I thought I'd make a thread about this.
I bought this game last year. I've never played it until then but I heard good things about it so I thought I'd try it out. It's a great game, highly tactical. I love it. And that's coming from someone who isn't a fan of turn-based gameplay.
It basically goes like this: you are the commander of a group of mercenaries. You have to hire these mercenaries yourself. You can choose from a large number of mercenaries who have different stats and talents. There are mercenaries that are very strong, others are great marksmen or talented lock pickers, etc. A man hires you to assassinate Queen Diadranna, a tyrant in the fictional African country of Arulco.
You begin the game with a sum of money, which you can use to hire a team of mercenaries. You are then dropped into the north of Arulco, and the game basically says: "Go nuts". You're free to do anything you want; you can capture villages and mining facilities for extra profit, train militias or you can go straight after Diadranna. It's entirely up to you.
Now, the great thing about this game is that there is a fan-made patch called 1.13. Actually, it's more like a big mod because it adds a ****load of weapons and gear (and by ****load I mean hundreds of them, no kidding). Really, this mod is awesome and if you play JA2 you should play it with 1.13. Before installing it you should first familiarize yourself with the vanilla part of the game though, as 1.13 doesn't show the intro cutscene and it ramps up the difficulty level. Then restart the campaign with 1.13.
Combat is turn-based, everything else is real-time. Gameplay can be described as a sort of turn-based Commandos mixed with a Total War-style freedom to roam the campaign map and some RPG elements. Ammo can be scarce so you might want your mercenaries to use weapons that use the same caliber. You have to make a lot of tactical choices like that. The graphics are dated of course but still look fine. After a while you'll get used to them. Also works with widescreen.
If you love tactical gameplay and high replay factor, then Jagged Alliance 2 with 1.13 is an excellent choice.

Old screenshot I made, showing my team of mercenaries and the weapons I gave them; FN FAL with scope, Groza, an AK variant, SVD, M14 and HK416/417 (forgot which one, haven't played it in a while). All 1.13 weapons. Capturing a SAM site. The screenshots don't really do the game justice, the graphics actually look a bit better than that.
Great game, highly recommended.
