Is this unusual sound a bug or intentional?

Every once in a while I hear this sound while playing The Ball:

It always feels sort of out of place and happens at seemingly unrelated times. I'm guessing it is a "sound not found" placeholder or maybe some sort of debug signal from the game or sound library that something needs to be fixed -- sort of like the big yellow question marks some games will show when they are missing a model file. It feels like that sound is designed to get people's attention. But I don't really know.

It has happened in quite a few places, but for the first time I've been able to reproduce it: the sound plays every time I load my game where it is currently saved. At this point, my Launch log file shows this:

Maybe the sound is related to those warnings?

What does the sound actually mean? It isn't terribly bothersome. If it is a 'bug', I don't really mind if I never find a solution. But I am curious to find out what it is.
