I was a fan of the mod and was interested in the game but I was disappointed when I learned it used steamworks as I don't like steam, so I decided not to buy. Now that it's been six months since release I'm wondering if there's been any news of a non-steam version?

It runs through Steam... it has Steam achievements...

There is never going to be a non-steam version as its been integrated with it. And seriously... wtf is not to like about Steam? Especially as a reason for not getting the game. This isn't Games for Windows.

You can't pirate it is my guess.

Yes you can, although for such a good value at such a good price I don't see why you would.

A lot of people disagree with Steam on ethical grounds, i.e. the right of resale. Once you have it bound to your account (which you have to do with even the retail copy), you can't sell it again.

you can pirate any game, seriously no amount of drm you put its going to be pirated.

And the game has to be activated through steam, but you can buy it at stores like best buy.

Yeah I'm in the UK and I've seen this game on shelves in GAME stores. But as others have said it still needs to be activated through steam and I'm not sure if you can sell the disc on once its been activated to your account. Almost certainly not now I think about it.

If you play KF while in "steam-offline-mode", there is noch connection to the TWI-KF-Masterserver. This means your perks won't progress/be saved, so after you exit the game - all perk progress will be gone...
(There is a mutator, that let the listen/dedicaded server save the perk progress for the players, that play on that server. Don't know if this work with a "steam-offline-version" of KF, cause I don't know if you can connect to any internet-KF-server without authorisation of/by the TWI-KF-Masterserver?...

I although think, that you won't get any updates/patches/(FREE)contenupdates/DLCs (2 skin-packs available) for the KF-retail-version without an active steam-account.

Yes, I was asking if there's a version that doesn't run through Steam.

The achievements are neither here nor there, I certainly wouldn't care if the non-steam version didn't have any.

And seriously... wtf is not to like about Steam?

The longer startup times, the autopatching, the overlay notification, the lousy options, the single friends list, the timing of releases, the constant CD-key nagging and the downtime?

I'm aware that for some people some of those are advantages, but for me steam's faults outweigh the one or two advantages it has and I prefer to buy a boxed version or from someone like GamersGate instead.

As nobody's answered the original question I assume there hasn't been any news about a non-steam version?

Nope.

Steam is a tradeoff. We get the convenience of not having to go out to a shop to buy our games and we can redownload them whenever we need to (playing at a mate's house, reinstalling Windows, etc.)

But if we wish to sell them, we can never do that. It's against the ToS of Steam and there's no way to transfer an account anyway without giving over your personal information.

Ergo I am very careful with my purchases, and I rarely buy anything at full price on Steam. Packages and weekend deals are your friend.

Personally, everything about Steam is an advantage. Sure there are downtime sometimes, but it is a small price to pay for what you get.

I've never had steam ask me for a activation code. That's one of the things I love about it! I don't want to think how much money I've wasted over the years rebuying games that I've lost the code or damaged the disc.

I almost never sell on games anyway because I know I would want to play them once they're gone and trade in value is almost always an arse raping rip off anyway. I payed

This is steam only and so is shattered horizon. (Saw your thread over there)

There's no effect on game start up times. Steam imposes no restrictions on game options. Patches and releases are controlled by developers, and I have no idea where you're getting cdkey nag screens.

This is very reminiscent of the hearsay from when Steam was first introduced. I won't argue that the client was perfect at launch but that was six years ago.

I remember seeing/trying Steam a few years ago. I hated it! Couldn't stand it and I wrote it off as a pile of steaming ****. Of course, now that I've gone back to it, I don't think I would have played a bunch of the games I do play without it. It's useful and the deals they throw down at this current point in time are a steal to what you could pay in stores for.

@Endless Waves: I'm fairly sure your biased opinion of Steam is because you haven't tried it/seen it in action recently.

Alternately, OP is somewhere that they have Steam blocked to keep people from choking their network ( eg, University / College ) or screwing off instead of working. If I was somewhere like that, I'd love a legal option to playing online without steam or complex software that tries to get around aforementioned blocks.

What?

1. It might take you *slightly* longer to load up a game because you need to run Steam first, but those of us who use Steam have it already loaded up...

2. Autopatching? So you want a game that isn't up to date? Oh and you can turn that off btw... as reasons go that 1 is just retarded.

3. You can stop it notifying you, full stop.

4. Lol.

5. Oh is 1 not good enough for you? Who gives a damn.

6. They're released the same time retail is... usually.

7. Lolwut? I think you have Steam confused with Games for Windows.

8. Downtime? What downtime? Steam Community breaks alot but Steam itself sure as hell doesn't.

Me thinks your secretely wanting to pirate it.

If you want to pirate it you don't ask if there is a Standalone version, you just google it and download it.
The downtime, I have probably only ever had one time it's been down since I joined steam last year.
Autopatching is great, why would you not want it? Makes sure all the servers and clients are up to date, only bad thing I can see about steam and stuff, is where it will say something is out today, but it will actually be released at about 11:00PM GMT.

Steam is the dogs b0ll0cks for all the reasons above and more. I've thought that ever since HL2. I saw the future back then and the future was Steam (not to mention without it there would be no TWI meaning this forum would be a mere figment of our imagination). Steamhating is so pass
