So I'm building a PC and I was wondering if the nvidia geforce gts 240 1024mb was a good enough graphics card to run HoS(or any UE3.0 game for that matter) smoothly and with mostly high settings

thanks

the 240ies are pretty much 8800 series of nvidia. SO generally without AA and stuff the run atleast UT3 pretty well. But as that card is not fast enough to utilize the full effect of physics and stuff anyway, i'd say go with ati.

Over the entire range in bang for buck ATI is better than nvidia for now (unless you want physx or nvision).

There's a 4850 (Ati) on newegg fo $99 right now, which should be able to handle the game much better than a gt240, for the same price. The 4850 is about 1 1/2 times more powerful than the gt240 (give or take a bit depending on the game).
Observe this review pitting the two against each other in Unreal Tournament 3: http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/gigabyte_gt240/15.html

4850:

If you do spring for the gt240 however, make sure to get the one with GDDR5 memory. 512mb of GDDR5 memory would be MUCH better than 1024mb of GDDR3 memory.

The GT240 is by no means a bad card, hell it looks like it gets great frames in Unreal 3, so ultimately the choice is yours.

it can't do anti aliasing well. And doesnt offer the best performance for its money. But to say that it sucks goes a bit far.

Considering it can run every game without AA at 1920x1080 beside crysis and Arma2. But there are better alternatives. the 240 is thesame as the 9800 and 8800, so relatively differences in performance are mostly memory related.

In general personally i'd look for athe cheapest ati 5xxx series, or if you dont need the vidcard now and want it for hos only. Then wait till hos releases and buy a vidcard then, prices will have dropped.

The GTS 250 = 8800.

The 240 is not an 8800. It is even worse.

Spend some more money.

I'd go with the ATI 5850 if you can afford it.

Save a bit more cash and grab something from the GTX line.

I've got a GTX 260 896MB and it runs UE3 games with AA quite well.

Or you could go ATi. I haven't had a Radeon since the good ol' days though.

Keep saving up. In May this year the new AMD Leo platform will be released.
The onboard GPU should be more than powerful enough to run Unreal Tournament 3 with AA and AF at high resolutions.

I've played Hell's Highway on an onboard HD 3300 GPU and it was smooth as silk. I don't think you'll need to bring out the big guns for this game, especially with the newer generation of AMD IGPs.

Keep in mind they are DirectX 10.1 and they won't run Crysis cranked up. But for Heroes of Stalingrad they should be fast enough.
Saves you from investing in an expensive GPU, which you can always do later on if you need the power.
