won't

Nope, game will settle into those that like it, and those that will ditch for bf3, cod, ect. I like them all, but I'll be playing RO2 for a while.

When TWI gets around implementing the choosable unlocked upgrades system, we shall see the player base steadily increase again :)

So TWI, what are you waiting for ? :)

I like it the way it is.

I can go on any of the five or so servers I usually play on and find at least a couple of people I've often played with on a regular basis.

Having a small community gives you all the advantages of pubbing and clan-based gaming at the same time, and most of the servers still alive are pretty well set up.

*edit*

Just read the suggestion that Rising Storm might be a paid expansion. If it is, they can stick it where the sun doesn't shine. What percentage of a user-base of 5,000 are really likely to buy a mod?

Well if it is a quality product? Why not? You're argument dosn't make sense. Making a mod is alot of work my friend, if it deserves compensation why not sell it.

*Edit*

TWI have said it would have to significantly be different to RO2 "vanilla" and be exceptionnally good. I think they have high expectations if its going to be sold, they didn't promise the team money.

This game is not going to day in the next months beause it has a huge fan base ... a new game witouth this huge fan base should be dead due to the problems and bugs ... D&D Daggerdale or Breach for example died in about 2/3 months due to the bugs and problems despite They initially had a good reception and good sales .

But if They don't fix the bugs , problems and release the SDK to increase the map quaintity it can die more quicly than we can imagine.

I'm pretty sure that RO2 is TWI's best selling game.

It might be TWI's best selling game but it has left a bad impression among alot of first time TWI buyers.
Which is very unfortunate as it will be a struggle to get them to try it again once the bugs have been ironed out and it is optimized and promised content has been released.

Will it die?

Hmmm....... Nah.

Mods will improve, evolve and keep HOS alive for a looong time to come. It will never have huge player numbers but who cares? I'd rather play in a smaller community of like minded people than be lost in a sea of twitch shooters.

The lack of mod tools for every other mainstream FPS will keep the flavor of the month crowd moving on and on to the greener grass and bloodier screens. Fine by me.

I'm worried about the number of players in more obscure areas, like on the west coast of the U.S. or Australia. Whenever I try and find a game theres usually only like 2 or 3 filled servers

I think a free weekend, like killing floor, and a price drop would be great, maybe 20-50%.
Maybe not now, but some time, maybe in the new year.

Killing floor got a lot popular after the free weekend, and it still has a good population.

Its not dying...Infact its like long career has barely even started.

Thats the thing with games that have a "niche" (hate that word, makes me feel like a damn hipster, but its appropriate) community, they love it to death and dont seem to give up on it.

Although when Skyrim comes along we might aswell say goodbye to everything...im joking, I hope.
skyrim can be completed in 100 minutes .. some guy already did a speedrun :)

and you can complete morrowind in 7 minutes.

But if you're playing an elder scrolls game only to do the main story quests, well, you're doing it wrong.

My initial disappointment in RO2 has faded away, I think I'll still be playing this 5 years from now. RO2 is going to have the exact same thing happen to IT that happened to ro ost. Mods are going to come out, and then more people will play the mods than the actual game. DH has a far bigger playerbase than vanilla RO does; and I think thats whats going to happen here. In any case, its going to be around as long as hardcore RO junkies play it.

I expect the game to die.

It will die a long, horrible, horrible death, with hints of 'living forever' as new blood surges in after sales and free weekends, but it will still die in the end.

Just think, in 8 to 10 Years we might not be able to find a server for the game that runs 24/7.

Come friends. Let us watch as this game dies, a slow, slow, painful death, full of patches and mods, and countless people popping in and out over the next decade.

(Seriously now. I know people who still play Elite. One of them is a kid half my age! He wasn't even BORN when the game was released. Games don't die. People just move on and play other things, while other people continue to enjoy it.)

I'm in Hong Kong, which makes picking servers tricky. At peak time, there's usually one full server JP-HOHEI-SEN, and sometimes a second server <50% full.

The frustration is that because there's such a small population, spread out across HK, Singapore, China, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, etc - server pings are generally crap. The most popular servers for me are either in Japan or Korea, which results in me with a 100+ ping most of the time.

It also makes communication really hard, as you have players who speak either Japanese, Korean, Cantonese, English, Mandarin, etc.

Having said all that, the Asian playerbase is pretty damn good. I have high hopes for when the SDK is released, and there's the option for bolts-only servers, new maps, etc. That's when RO2 will take off again, provided there's good advertising for it.
