I really do not want this game o die, but yet many people still complain about it and it seems like everyone is giving up on it.

Allot of us are just waiting for the SDK. I'm sure this game is going to live longer than bf3 because of mod support. Halflife 2 was released 7 year

I myself am just waiting for custom maps, the game atm is just underwhelming, and I really can't be arsed to unlock everything again.

If the game had no unlocks I would be playing more of it, but the less I play of it the less I will in the future, it is never fun when everybody is not on equal footing. So imo remove unlocks and you will have one more player :p

and post above, more people are playing mw2 offline than playing ro2, that is not a good sign, a ****ty 2 year old single player game vs a one month old, supposedly, good game.

Short answer... F*** No !

It will outlast Battlefield 3 in the sense that there will be Battlefield Bad Company 3

While RO2... will have RO2 + Mods.

The original Red Orchestra was less popular and still played today.

Speaking of which... I am jumping in right now.

Honestly, I don't think it's in any danger of dying. It might look that way because the majority of people you see discussing things on the forum aren't talking about how much they like the game, or how well-done it is, or how excited they are for so-and-so update/patch...they're talking about how unrealistic it is. Or how arcade-ey the game's become and how they'll never touch it again. Or screaming for the developers to be lynched until they fix random collections of various bugs & things like that.

I play the game. I enjoy the game - greatly.
I don't see any fewer players than there were at the start.

And I'm not getting myself upset every time I'm reminded that there's more than one submachine gunner per map. You either enjoy it or you don't, but with a franchise like RO, where the fans are about as "hardcore" & loyal as you can get, it seems like a lot of people forget that the goal is to have fun...because they're disappointed with how the game turned out (as in contrary to their pre-launch expectations).

This game is far from dead and will outlast many big name huge budgeted fps's.While a lot of casual fps gamers deem this game too hard and too much of a change to the normal arcade type game their used to.Most fps now a days is made to where anyone that's ever played a fps can jump in and do good.Letting the game hold their hand while they play with forgiving game mechanics.Tactical realism games on the other hand have a learning curve and in old school fashion can be challenging.

RO will always have a die hard core of fans while it may be smaller than other recently released games it will remain steady. With new and free custom content the player base will grow with time. The way I see it there is 2 types of fps's and shouldn't be judged side by side. There is arcade type games which the market is full off clones all the same minus a few game modes and a "few" design elements. Then there is tactical realism games which only a handful exist RO and Arma these games being "unique" will always have a cult type following for people wanting something different.

While the casual fps gamer jumps around to the latest game the niche type gamers remain loyal. So RO may not have a huge player base like arcade type fps.It will remain steady and more loyal giving the game long life.

Come back in 4 years and ask this question with free game mods like Rising Storm,In Country Vietnam,Iron Europe(perhaps more) and a steady stream of custom maps and modded servers. You will find that it has indeed stood the test of time while other casual games went dead long ago.

Thanks to TWI when you buy RO your buying a long term investment not just a quick money grab demanded by big name publishers.I still play RO1 and it was made back in 04 and it still has a player base.

Please check the facts before saying false things. ;)
Rising Storm has still to be decided if it will be free or paid for (most likely paid).

If mods dont kick in time, player base might go down real low.
I fear so.
I hope they can sort the problems with the SDK out, so the modders can finally start to really work on things.

given the lack of mod support for bf3 then this will have a much longer shelf life compared to that game. Maybe less players overall but why would anyone care if ro2 has 2-3k and bf3 - 10-20k? As long as theres more content, mods and maps and I have a choice of at least a dozen servers then I'm good.

the original RO was in a league of its own. Their was nothing like it at the time and was the first realistic iron sight shooter out there.
Please don't bash BF3 as kiddy as at first it was COD and now attacking BF.

Im a huge fan of RO and BF series. If RO had the marketing that COD had and what BF has now it would become a kiddy game as well.
Popularity attacks the young ones.

I want the original RO to be released on mac to be honest. I'm out of the age of waisting money on gaming machines. Don't get me wrong I love relaxing on my couch playing xbox.

It may sound wierd in some people eyes but I don't think TWI would let it die. I think they'll improve it long enough, make it cheap enough and have frequent free weekends enough to keep the game alive up until and beyond RO3 release date.

I have checked the facts if its just good it will be free

Depends on the quality of Rising Storm if its really good it will be a paid expansion and that mod team will deserve it.And at the same time even if its a paid expansion it will certainly offer more content than some shallow DLC other games will charge you for.The other two RO2 mods planned will most likely be free.

My point is RO for its price will offer more free content either official content or mods than any game out. While other games will charge you 30-50 bucks for a hand full of new maps and some shallow single player campaign Ro2 will have hundred plus of free maps.

Also people don't realize the power of the SDK and the server options that will come.If you can get a server to adopt you mod you could do just about anything like a zombie apocalypse mod or w/e.Its only limited by a players ability to code and model design.

The simple fact is for its price RO2 delivers the best long term value around.

Thats the thing with games that have a "niche" (hate that word, makes me feel like a damn hipster, but its appropriate)

I have friends that called me a hipster for playing this obscure game once, I retorted that I'm not a hipster for looking down on their CoD, I'm an elitist prick, even though I'm not in the group I'm one of those in this sence. They ask me what the difference is, and while an Elitist is the kind that should get off his high horse, a hipster can't afford a horse because they don't believe in having jobs or contributing to society in any way.

No it wont. The game started out with about 9000 people peak, then it went down and kept going down til about 1800 peak at this point I was afraid it would die quickly. But then the updates came out and its crept up to 2900 peak. I'm going to keep watching those player stats each week, but I'm certain it wont die. http://store.steampowered.com/stats/

Of course RO2 will live. After a while a lot of people will leave when the next COD comes out but that will most likely be for the best.

Even people who done 100% like vanilla soon there will be tonnes of mutators and mods that will completely change the game and make it a lot more popular.

Also remember the game could always become more popular later on when big mods attract new people, like when DH came for RO:Ost so many people bought RO:Ost just to play DH.

I like it the way it is.

I can go on any of the five or so servers I usually play on and find at least a couple of people I've often played with on a regular basis.

Having a small community gives you all the advantages of pubbing and clan-based gaming at the same time, and most of the servers still alive are pretty well set up.

*edit*

Just read the suggestion that Rising Storm might be a paid expansion. If it is, they can stick it where the sun doesn't shine. What percentage of a user-base of 5,000 are really likely to buy a mod?

Have you played the original Vietcong?
It was the 1st game I've played, with some sort of proper IS implementation....and a basic cover-system pretty close to what RO2 offers nowadays.
