Is it just me or spawning on squad leader rarely works?

Obviously, you can't respawn on him if he's dead.

When you do choose to respawn on him, your spectator camera will follow him around, so by the time you respawn, you know the SL is alive. Yet, about 9 times out of 10, I will respawn on the team spawn and not on the SL.

What's up with that?

You can't spawn on him if he's being supressed and if there's enemies around him.

Squad leader needs can't be too close to the objective. When I play him I stand a little bit away from the objectives.

Not so much in time for release but down the road I think this should be addressed in terms of the game UI making it much more clear how this feature works. I eventually figured out everything that has been touched on in this thread but it certainly dosen't help you figure it out. My suggestions:

A - Way too hard to figure out where your squad leader is in the first-place. Need a more clear icon when you click on "spawn on leader" that really jumps out at you to show you where he is.

B - If he is currently suppressed or too close to enemies this needs to be spelled out in text, perhaps with other visual aides. (For example, the screen could go greyscale if you have the option selected but he is in a currently unspawnable location.)

C - I'm on the fence with the concept that you don't spawn right on the leader but somewhere in his general area. After I spawn I am usually quite disoriented for a moment or two as I try to figure out where I am. (Especially if the leader was indoors but you spawn outdoors) Not sure honestly what the best solution for this is. If the leader is truly not close to an enemey I'm not sure it would hurt to spawn closer to him - since he is not near an enemey it won't be like battlefield where you are shooting somebody 5 feet away and a friendly magically pops up beside him.

One simple way to fix that issue is to tell at spawn why you have not spawned on your squad leader.

This,

It's still very possible to spawn on squad leader, I've done it plenty of times with my clanmates. It's just that sometimes I spawn upto 50 or 100 meters away without any notice.

A default spawn location would be great too, you automatically spawn at said location unless specified - missing the spawn is annoying. If the spawn location moves, have the game spawn you at the nearest point closest to the objective.

I definitely agree with that one. I was also struggling to spot the squad leader sometimes on the spawn menu mini map, and it isn't even clear once you've selected squad leader as your spawn point. All I could usually see was the main spawn being de-selected (from red to white I think?) - but I couldn't see a player then turning red. Other players and even dying players are clearly distinguishable, but the SL seems to be in camouflage :)

Also, when the Squad Leader is in a situation that is preventing his squadmates spawning on him, he should be told! Via some kind of icon which changes state or something. That way at least he'll know why he is on his own and why his subordinates are taking rounds for him.

This is very important IMO.

Although I'm fairly sure by now you can spawn on the SL even if he was in a capzone, the suppression-point probably is right though.

Ok, in other words, this feature doesn't work. If meeting the conditions to spawn on the SL is so damn complicated, you might as well not have it.

Or it should be like in Bad Company 2, you spawn on SL and appear right behind him, no matter where he is as long as he is alive.

Spawn issues

Spawn issues

I just played a game of TE on Grain Elevator and respawned near Squadleader 3 times just behind enemies which were facing the windows and I just popped up right behind them. Slaughtered them down with my MP40 and then got killed. The next 2 spawns happened there as well with Russians only 5-10 m away and turning their back on me. It was fun for me but surely frustrating for the other team. Not sure if I like that respawn near SL option as it seriously compromises gameplay and creates a bit of chaos.

I really gave it a chance but after many similar experiences I'd say it reduces realism and relies on luck where and if you spawn near SL. Think it needs some serious changes or needs to be abolished. I like the idea of Squads staying together but I don't think the current system does gameplay any favours. Plus it says "waves of attackers/defenders to simulate reinforcements" but spawning next to SL means I miraculously appeared inside the building for example even if it is dangerous to even get there and a team holding a building can face multiple enemies inside if the SL gets through and stays safe.

I think I could live without it altogether.

What about if your SL is in your own cap zone when it is completely under your control, and uncontested by the enemy? Can you spawn on him then?

I've only been able to spawn on my SL twice. Both times I spawned IN FRONT of him. The first time I was then immediately TKed by artillery. The second time I spawned right in machine gun cross fire. You should only be able to spawn behind the SL. It's ridiculous to spawn in front of him outside of cover where you are guaranteed to be killed.

Same thing happened to me the other way, when a poor sucker tried to spawn on his SL and ended up spawning in the middle of our territory, almost exactly between my gunsights. He didn't last long.

Spawning on the SL is a stupid gimmick stolen from Battlefield. I've gotten so many kills on Grain Elevator because someone has spawned on their squad leader (who is in cover) and ends up in the middle of sniper heaven.

They don't even get to move before a rifleman puts a hole through their chest. Of all the features added into RO2, spawning on the squad leader is arguably the dumbest and worst implemented.

Exactly. It is actually quite entertaining.

worked everytime for me...even if he was surrounded by hordes of enemies.
