I too, am also good with the IS on a bolt... infact.. I can hit about 98% of my tagets when I'm using IS.. while on the other hand... the scope actually allows me to see a pixel form into a person... but the scope just totally throws out my hitting percentage from about 98% down to about a 65-70%

I think its the whole idea of seeing something that close, and it just throws my range off......

Yes I know about bullet drop, and leading your taget... I've been around since the beginning.... But nothing beats good old IS...

There the original, and the best...... Long Live the K98..

Ya I use the small scope.... I like the fact I can see a dot running on the side... move my scope over and see a crazy ruski running for his dear life as I put one into his chest....

But I do know what your talking about tunnel vision... It gets me every once in a while... totally forget to check the sides and I wind up getting picked off..:D

I prefer a semi-auto rifle with IR sights in this game. Optics are a specialist weapon for select circumstances as some have pointed out. Most maps don't support snipers, not giving them the range and cover they need to operate effectively. My favorite loadout is Squad Leader with a semi-auto rifle so I can spot my enemies with the binocs and then take them out with careful sharpshooting.

I also don't like the thick posts on the scopes in RO. Both Russian and German have the same look which doesn't seem historically accurate to me. Since I haven't handled either a Russian or a German WW-II sniper rifle I don't know but the later Soviet scopes have a different reticule with range finding gradients on them. I expect someone here can tell me the difference between WW-II scopes and later Cold War models.

In RL I'm a cop and my personal rifle has quick detachable mounts to change between a red dot sight and a compact 6x scope. For most encounters I prefer the quickness of the red dot or iron sights over the scope. The scope doesn't make my run of the mill semi-auto into a sniper rifle, it just gives me the option of more precise aiming at distance when manning a fixed post. So my gaming style tends to follow my real life preferences. Maybe if I was a trained sniper I'd work differently, eh?

The Soviet scopes were based off the German ones which is why they look similar in fact they may have even bought telescopic scopes from Germany during the non-aggresion pact. Im not sure about Soviet variations but the Germans did have other scope variations for their rifles such as Major Konig's(I hope I nailed the spelling) sniper rifle scope as seen on enemy at the gates.

The semi-auto snipers have larger bullet drop, you have to aim higher even if the range isn't that far, the bolt action snipers have little or no bullet drop until it gets to really far away shots. I once picked off a guy literaly on the other side of the map, I aimed my scope like 2 inches above him and 1-2 inches away from him (because he was running to the side), that was the best shot I ever made in RO.

Even sniping standing up is really easy, you just can't have your scope up for long or it starts to sway. I don't recall the rifle swaying at all immediately after you bring up the scope in any position, rested or not. If I'm using the bolt action rifle and I'm standing, I bring the scope up and take the shot and then bring the scope down before working the bolt and then bring it back up. This way I encounter virtually no rifle sway.

I don't like to use the scope, it's a ***** to use, harder then the ironsights.

And it's not as satisfying as using ironsights either.
Don't like being the sniper (sharpshooter) too, I prefer to hunt the sniper! :D
On a map like Barashka you wont be hunting any GOOD snipers with IS, because you'll be dead at ranges which you cannot even discern the sniper.

...unless I go Prone, and because of that, It reduces my mobility and offense, so I am left to camp, which is something I hate to do...

Simple,if you dont like/want to camp, dont pick the sniper class...
Anyways,as others have said, proning or supported position are the best way to go,but mind you you will have sway while proned if you're not supported...
I can get great results on Kessel as a sniper sniping from the Central Admin building and covering NR,and since the range isnt too big,I can make good use of the good ol' Kar98k...

Bottom line,if you dont like camping, sniper is not the right class for you ;)
As for the poll,it all depends on the range,if I go CQC I take a bolt,if I want to hide and snipe,sniper...

Curiously, I find the scoped semi autos less accurate than the same rifle with iron sights at similar distances. I don't think this is just my imagination either. I've emptied the clip of a G43 at 150 m without hittting a guy when he was stationary on Rakowice.
I don't seem to have the same problem as much with the bolt action rifles, so I always choose these if I want to snipe.
