Iron Europe

I absolutely have to disagree on rifle grenades here. I have never heard them mentioned before in WWI, and while they could have certainly existed, this in my eye means they either weren't common, or were not all that good.

Furthermore, rifle nades are just exploited so horribly in game. At the very least I hope they are fuse, and not impact, based. Impact based just turns them into long range accurate artillery from the hip, from everything I've seen. Even fuses would probably not alleviate that. One of the main uses in RO atm is they are one of the few weapons where one can take out an enemy without sacrificing mobility for a limited time (every other weapon except melee you cannot sprint and fire, and often you have to find cover/place to rest your weapon, go into IS, and kill the person.) The main disadvantage of this is that 1) Grenade ranges are not all that long, 2) to get an accurate grenade throw one has to often be sprinting in a straight line for a second or two, and 3) having grenades out are risky, if somebody appears suddenly you are often screwed, and with the german nades you have to also watch the fuse.

None of these disadvantages are in rifle nades, they have longer range, and I'm guessing they will be fairly accurate.

If they are to be in game, at the very least, limit it to one person, in a specialist role similiar to sniper or MGer.

Although i could agree with you on exploitation, Rifle Grenades were common, they are mentioned a lot in World War 1 books, such as Journey's End:

"Hardy: Here You are: 115 Rifle Grenades-"
I would quote other books, but none of them are on my desk right now

"The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime."

Sir Edward Grey, Britain's Foreign Secretary, August 1914

You enjoyed the first three mods for Red Orchestra.

The first three mods were great . . . but you know you want a fourth one.

Well, here's your opportunity to play a role in making a fourth mod for RO: Iron Europe: 1914-1916, the first planned release for a mod based on the first two years of warfare on the Western Front during the First World War.

Over the last year, our team has grown from just four people to its present membership of twelve.

But we need more.

We are seeking volunteers to help work on the mod. Anyone who wants to help work on the mod at our forum site is more than welcome.

You don't need any experience, although, of course, that would definitely be welcome.

Even if you don't know how to make a map or model a weapon, that's fine.

We welcome beginning Modders who have a desire to learn new skills and work on the mod.

Specifically, we are looking for help in these areas:

1) Researchers: No computer modding skills required!

Help research Maps for Iron Europe: ability to Google, gather relevant websites and photos pertaining to the Map.

2) Mappers: Anyone who wants to learn how to map using the free videos at 3dBuzz.com or would like to make a map for Iron Europe based on the maps that are still open (Langemarck, Gheluvelt, Gommecourt (Somme), Delville Wood).

Also, additional maps are available for our proposed Second Release based on the final two years of the war).

You can pick just one, or however many you would like to map.

3) Writers: Iron Europe is going to feature longer, fuller Map Introductions and Unit Descriptions so you, the Player, will be able to better understand the battles that took place and the men who fought them.

If you enjoy reading military history and always wanted to try and write some yourself, or you just like to write in general and would like to see your writing published in an Iron Europe map, become a Writer!!!

No computer modding skills required!

4) Modelers

5) 2d Artists

6) Coders

We simply meet at the forum website and post our work and ideas there:

http://z15.invisionfree.com/Iron_Europe/index.php

(We have a lot, and I mean a lot of information inside the Developer's Forum which you'll have access to if you join the Modding Team.)

Whatever time you are able to give is appreciated; we are flexible (for people who are going on vacation, busy with something, and definitely school and exams), but we are trying to get as much work on the mod as we possibly can this summer, before school starts up again.

If you are interested, just PM me, Gamburd, here at the RO Forum.

The Great War, or First World War, gained such titles from the unprecedented scale on which it was fought from the outset. There had never been so great a concentration of armed force in world history as that which formed the respective blocs ranged against each other in August 1914.

Gheluvelt: Belgium, November 1914

Hi,
I am working on a map for RO/CC and want to use some fixed maxim guns in a defensive barricade. Would you be willing to share what you have so I can use it in my map? I will of course send you back what I produce (code/sounds/animations/models etc).

I have to disappoint you. We don't have anything to share in that department :( It's not like we don't want to but we aren't working on Maxim MGs because we are concentrating at the Western Front (German Imperial Army versus BEF) So sorry.

But try After Horz/Minion Works http://www.after-hourz.com/ They did the static guns so they should know how to make a static machine gun.

And a general information: Visit and vote for our mod at moddb http://www.moddb.com/mods/iron-europe-1914-1916

Isn't it better to use your own webhost for your forum? It gives you more freedom and you can style it.

The answer may sound a bit floppy but we have better things to do ;) We got really awesome stuff done in the past weeks but we are still a little bit short on manpower (the more the merrier, right?). But don't worry we will consider what is best for the mod. :)

Alot of flopped and bored WW1 mod developers are out there.

Maybe you could try to get their attention and have them help you?
Now you can only hope they have experience with UEd or willing to learn UEd...

Sweet mod idea. Firstly, for contribution, I think I might be able to help as a writer, just give me the info. some intructions, and I think I can churn out some map descriptions, weapons descriptions, and miscellanious bits of info for your mod. Secondly, about rifle grenades, how are they going to be implemented in the game, because a rifle grenade with a high arc that cant be seen onscreen as your technically weilding a rifle is going to be hard, maybe you should think about having infantry opt to enter a 3d view, adjust angles and such, and then fire. But considering that option to be quite difficult to implement, id suggest either scrapping the idea completely for the first few releases, or, ingeniusly think up a perfect way to implement them, get it over with, finish up one or two maps, and make an alpha release.

PS. You need all the help you can get, now I know of a certain group of people who tried to make a WW1 mod for a game called mount and blade, the mod is now officially locked away from public I think as their thread on the Taleworlds forum is locked, but I could see what I can do to arrage the transfer of some of their material. Because prior to their thread lock down, was months of developement, they had rifles from every nation in the western world :p and alot of models, textures for uniforms, they even made a static mortar of some sort.

Please visit our forums you can post an application if you want to help us.

http://z15.invisionfree.com/Iron_Europe/index.php?act=idx

Much of this stuff in this thread is outdated we are now modding this for Game 2 (which will be an Unreal Engine 3 game) so I am not sure if the Mount and Blade stuff will be "good" enough for our purposes ;)

We have a great team now and making good progress but anyone (with any skill level!) is free to help :)

I recently visited my great great uncles grave who died on the first day of Kaiserslacht. as you may know the idea of that offensive was to split the french and british forces. He was in 1/1 Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers (The London Regiment), his battalion had just taken command of some french trenches. So his battalion was bang on the line between french and british lines. He was there first day of kaiserslacht. Bad Timing and location eh?

Buried in Chauny Commonwealth Graves, one strange thing to mention is that there are 2 Germans graves there, they had died in the opening days of the war. I do have pictures but im yet to get them back from my sister.
