I had this idea and I feel it is good enough to share on the forums.

I would like to see modders get together and work on this thing I will call "a new front toolkit". I will use the African Front as an example to explain what I mean.

Included in one large file would be the following:

- British, American, Australian, German, and Italian skins (sorry if I forgot someone)
- new weapons
- new vehicles
- new decorations (trees, plants, buildings)
- new voice commands
- new textures

Basically, all the files needed for a mapper to make a map that is in the North African Front. My key selling point is this: One could run an North Africa map and vote a ROO stock map without having to restart the server. The draw back with full fledged mods is that you cannot switch between the stock game and the mod instantaneously.

A "new front toolkit" would open up and new world of creativity. If you play a mod, you are limited to the maps created by the mod makers.

Well, I threw the idea out there. How do you feel about it?

You'd be no more limited to the maps by the mod then you are by the maps that shipped for Ostfront.
With a tiny amount of know-how, you'd be able to create maps for any published RO mod really.

i think what he meant was, that you cant just fire up RO and play a BS map without shutting down RO and load the mod.
What he suggests is basically a content pack with new actors, textures, sounds so you can create a map that looks like it plays on Mars but without actually starting a mod, but only RO.

Yes, this is exactly what I mean.

We have discussed this and the only way it could be done is to set it as a gametype. This requires quite extensive collaboration with TWI I have been told so would take a lot of work to pull off.

Easier if you just package a mod seperately.

to allow directly switching from vanilla RO maps to an entire other mod without restarting the server would really require some kind of auto-Steam update to be viable on the level you're talking about, I'd prefer to see the mods seperate, personally

errm, you can add content to a certain extent without using a mod or a mutator. You cant change things in the coregameplay like spawning, point distribution.
But things like new weapons, new vehicles, new objective styles (to a certain extent again), new player models, new skins and after all new maps can be done quite easily without a mod or a mutator.

This could be done once ROs main mods are finished, for example:

Campagna Italiana and burning Sands are finished, and also, say, a Meuse mod.

The developers form a little alliance and join all the mods in a huge package called "Red Orchestra Expanded: Italy, Britain, France" which has these armies to completion, and maps of the mods would all be added in this package along with everything.

Servers would run ROE(RO Expanded) and they could have specific nights where certain "fronts" are played. Today Italy, tomorrow Meuse, then Africa.

It would work, but it's really not needed and it requires a lot of collaboration.

This is why some mods are just a huge collective of developers, like Forgotten Hope, that way you can pack 6 fronts and 12 nations in a single huge mod.
