Installing Maps

I'm trying to download some maps from the steam workshop. After Subscribing and launching the game I can't find the map and noticed that a message appears in the top right saying "Download Failed".

What gives? How do I go about installing and playing modded maps?

It always says download failed, dont worry about that. What maps in particular? If you are downloading Western Front maps, they will appear in the Custom Gametype under the Steam Workshop Tab on the main menu.

A lot of the older workshop maps are busted unfortunately due to the old Cooking issue as well as the fact the workshop was total rubbish for a long time.
Some older maps will work fine, but for stable stuff try to stick with maps uploaded there after September / October 2014. Everything else you should stick with the forum direct links.

I reloaded the game some time afterwards and they are now showing in the custom tab.

I downloaded some random night maps that looked pretty good from the outset. I wouldn't mind playing a mod that has a focus on the Soviet Union. If there are any additional Russia voice lines that would be awesome (we spend half our time laughing at the vanilla ones :D)

Does anyone have any recommendations? What are the most populated these days?

Edit: I went to the custom tab and clicked on one of the downloaded mods and I couldn't find a server browser of any kind. It actually looked like I was the host and I was prompted to configure the server. Can anyone shed any light on this please?

Thanks!

If you go into the Steam Workshop Tab, then you will only be playing by yourself. If you want to play on populated custom map servers, these do exist on the Server Browser, but these days they are a bit more rare. The IOM Group has weekly events that feature several custom maps. TWI's Crucible server features nearly every custom map ever released on this game and does have activity from time to time.

Thanks for the info.

I just tried joining the Crucible prior to manually downloading the mod online and it seems to be downloading the mod prior to the loading screen. Am I right in thinking that it is not necessary to manually download custom maps?

Thanks

Edit: I guess I'm wrong :D

Yikes it seems that the mod is not properly installed, you might just do it manually.
