I think it is better because of the Steam integration to have the Steam name as in-game name and a clantag, it is pretty integral in Valve's strategy it seems. Or a custom game specific name would do too if you still would have the ability to see the Steam names of the people on the server.

I just think you should choose your name in the options... I see no flaws with this and I have no idea why you have to use your steam name in other games. I just find it stupid.

Maybe make it so the first time you play you have to change your name so it isn't ROPlayer. Or even make it so the first time you play it starts as your steam name but you can change it to whatever.

I really hope TWI doesnt do this. Games that get married to your Steam name, or even worse, only allow for one instance of a particular name (ala Unreal Tournament 3)... are teh suck.

I couldnt use REZ in UT3 because somebody was already using it and it pissed me off to no end. Please don't do this TWI.

This is to prevent the clones/fakes. I don't want someone that run around with my same nick doing the idiot and sullying my "reputation".

So, i hope that there will be a free name choice, but also the possibility to have a private nick, based maybe on the forum nick or on the steam nick or some other factors.....fakes really piss me off.

In Battle For Wesnoth, for example, you can choose your nick every time that you join the multiplayer, so, everyone can choose to be nicknamed "example123abc". But, if you register to the forum, then the forum nick becomes private and related to the log in password. This is very useful IMHO. ;)

EDIT: oooops my fail, i reminded right now the "Online player stats" that will require for sure a pass (and will prevent clone-nicks)

Well, there's no need to worry about clones or nick fakers because everyone has their own, unique SteamID that will never change......even if somebody impersonates you in a server, the GUID will reveal the true identity.

also with the whole "honor"/reputation thing built into the game, it would just be that players actual reputation, tracked and displayed by the game, that would be low......not yours :)

I agree. I tend to always play in offline friendlist mode because the second I go on I have to talk to people I don't feel like talking to. Having the name same as Steam name only makes it easier for people to recognize me.

I always liked when names where the same as the steam profile. I don't mind it personally and I find it very convenient when it is super easy to find another player's profile, so I can look it up even when it is super unimportant.

Would be nice if you somehow see both.

Steam names can be anything even identical names to someone else. Your steam username has to be unique but not your Steam name as your friends see it. Eg My steam username is in my sig but my name as my friends see it is just Centy.

I wouldn't be that bothered by the game using my Steam name at all and if you need to report a hacker or verbally abusive player to steam you need to know their ingame name is the same as their name on Steam.

....

I understand the difference, thanks; not sure how it came across that I didnt.

Being able to change your name while in-game with the 'setname' feature is a 100 times more convenient than having to minimize the game and go into your Steam panel and change your name. We goof around at times and change our names in-game according to recent conversations or happenings. Having to go out of game to do that is a b!tch.

In addition to that, sometimes I want to play without being bothered, so I dont want my in-game name to be the same as my Steam name.

There are several reasons why your in-game name should not be married to your Steam friends name, and developers should never allow for only one instance of a player handle across the entire game.. my opinion of course ;)

is there a reason why 4 people downvoted this?

@admin, i request a ratings report (which you can do....and have finally admitted you could) on this post and those who continue to troll be infracted for their abuse. :IS2:

I think what people want is a per-game clantag, which is the limitation of that system atm.

I said about that earlier in the thread :p

Also that is possible in other Steamworks games, e.g. CS:S has this feature so I dont understand why couldnt they add it to RO2

Really? That's interesting.

I don't think it'd be an issue to have Steam names in game if we could edit clantags per game.

I think the ideal solution would be having an option like the Source Engine games that let you see all the people on the server you're currently in and either mute them or add them to your Friends list. The menu should have several columns telling you their ingame name, their Friends name and then their account name (and their ping).

One thing that I really REALLY dislike if my Steam name being my ingame name. This happens on all Valve games and also happens on Killing Floor and some other games.

PLEASE DON'T DO IT!!

I don't like to wear clan/unit tags in my steam name because I think it looks messy. So I normally just have J
