hey i wanted to know if someone here could tell me about my rifle. my dad bought it when he was a teenager for $16. I tried looking up the markings and stuff but didn't get far. the only thing i saw that matched something i found on the web was the little hammer symbol on it that said "Tula pre 1928" or something. anyways any help is appreciated. also, i don't know why the bolt is isn't stright...

It looks like your dad's rifle is a sportarized Tula m91. A lot of old surplus rifles had their stocks cut down to make them look more like a civilian rifle, and to make them lighter for hunting. Unfortunatly it didn't do their collectable value any good.

interesting... scrubbed barrel shank except for the serial number

if the barrel wasn't cut down it could be restocked and the bolt replaced... but the scrubbed markings will always be missing

another posible concern is it may have been rechambered and some rechambered mosins (usually in .30-06) can be unsafe to shoot (geniune bannerman conversions are the only ones i could trust)

i'd suggest posting the pics over at http://www.russian-mosin-nagant-forums.com/smf/index.php

your rifle is an earlier version mn91/30 with a hex receiver head (notice how most are round) and a sporterized stock. i would hate to shoot that, the flip must be horrendous. you could just get another stock (prolly for like 5 bucks) and accurize that by sanding the inside along the barrel so none of the wood touches the barrel (so can slide a dollar bill through it) dont sand where the upper wood piece touches the lower. just dont want wood to touch the barrel.
then you'll have a nice looking gun. the only sporterized gun i have is a 1903 springfield pederson i got from gramps.

It's not a m91/30 as it has the old rear sight. Also the Tula hammer mark on the receiver dates from before the introduction of the m91/30.

Plus can you please put some line breaks between your pictures? Makes for easier reading of the forum.

Cheers

How long is the barrel? If it hasn't been cut down you would at least be able to tell whether it's an infantry rifle, or a Dragoon. Also, what is the year on the tang?

i don't know how long it is for sure, but the sight on the tip of the barrel definately looks not of the era. also i can't find a date anywhere on this thing, just a bunch of mis-matched serial numbers.

So there is no number here? This would at least give you a receiver build date.

I finally got to shoot my AK47 last weekend (it gets very hot here through the summer) and I can't believe what an amazing firearm it is. Recoil is light and feels good, very controllable in rapid fire. I had a few failure to feeds but I switched to a different magazine and it fixed the problem.

I love my AK47 :)

I just purchased this matching K98 from a member at another web site. It's a 1937 S/27 (ERMA). The handguard has a different serial number, but given the condition of the rest of the stock I imagine it was repaired at some point during the war by a German arsenal. Once I get my C&R address updated it's all mine:

a funny thing wound up in the back of my truck today:
after1ia4.jpg

whoever put it in there was smart and remembered to put in 500 rds of 7.62x39 and to lock the truck as well... (ah, damn, must've been me... that would explain why I didn't have enough $$ for gas)
