In the flight sim area, we've recently had DCS: Blackshark released, Rise of Flight (WWI), and Strike Fighters 2/Wings Over Europe 2 released. And FSX is pretty recent as well.

As for arcadey games, we've had HAWX.

While we aren't flooded with flight sims, we do have a decent variety.

But yes, I wouldn't mind if BoP was released, even if it was arcadey. I still need 1946 though. 1946 comes with Pacific Fighters, correct?
HAWX is an action game, no disrespect to anybody but it's a different league completely. And I simply never really got into modern simulations, jet or heli. They just always seem more like work than enjoyment, but that's just me.

I heard good things about Rise of Flight though, so yeah, every now and then, there's something. No comparison to the days of Microprose, Jane's and then IL-2 though. As it seems now SoW is not coming out until 2011.

HAWX, although inferior in every way to Ace Combat 4/5/Z aside from graphics, is still worth picking up IMO. The co-op in the campaign is fun. Not in the same league, that is true, but arcadey flight games like Ace Combat are still fun, at least to me.

And I'd suggest you look into the Strike Fighters/Wings Over series.

It features aircraft from the late 50s-80s. Even then, the realism is not that detailed. The dog fighting in the game is very well done. Most of the time you are using crappy AIM-9B/D/E or K-13 Atoll/R-60 Aphids anyways, which aren't accurate. Because of this, there is still plenty of gun combat. I understand what you mean, looking at 4 MFDs and messing around with 40 radar modes is not that fun. This is why I like this series of games. The older 60-70s aircraft are more about flying than using computers.

Plus, there are so many mods for the game that you can fly a large variety of aircraft from all kinds of time periods. You can check out my videos in my thread here.

Sorry to go off topic.

I have to say I never heard about this series (Strike Fighters) until now.

But from the looks of it, the Isreal-Arab wars should be great, with some dogfighting too. I'll have to check it out!

For some reason I get sloppy performance with Wings Over Israel, while DCS Black Shark runs great. It's still good though, takes me back to iF-16 (in a good way).

Just remember, it is more of a sand box type game. Basic but dynamic missions with no editor. Multiplayer doesn't work, which really sucks.

Otherwise, it is good. They only cost $10 here, the SF2 series costs $20 on the website. So for the price it isn't bad.

Flaming Cliffs and WOI give me poor performance.

I love realism games. But flight sims go right over my head :(

I loved watching old IL2 vids on Youtube wishing I had the patience to do all that. But my prayer for a beautifully made and and easy to play flight sim has been answered in the form of Birds of Pray!!

:D

AFAIK there is only 2 missions in the demo. Pretty damn certain!

The game is pretty entertaining and more enjoyable than Blazing Angels and its sequel. The graphics are pretty nice, and I like having the choice between a more realistic experience and arcade, but it of course does not come close to the simulation on the PC. Overall, it's a fun game, but anyone looking to try it should rent it first before spending the full price.

Agreed. Finished it a week ago. Campaign was a bit short though, and no German campaign. D;
