Ok, I tried my 360 controller for a few missions now and it's a lot more comfortable than the horrible keyboard controls, obviously.
I ordered a cheap joystick now. Should be here the day after tomorrow. We'll see how that goes.:)

So, how did it go, Murph?

Actually, reviving this after a recent post by Yoshiro in the topic about RO2's anti-lag mutator referenced a flight sim with client-side detection and I just had this indescribably irresistible urge to fire up the good ole 1946 (don't think I can run CoD on current rig). Gotta get a joystick as well, because I'm tired of not having the luxury of a smooth flight like I used to have.

Anyways, this was still not the reason I revived the thread.

Patch 4.11m was the reason I've revived the thread for.
AI improvements such as line of sight restrictions based on plane model and cloud/terrain blocking LoS? Other nifty features?

Mind was blown out of the sky, needles to say. Downloading nau!

I'll have a question about IL-2. I recently installed it on my new PC and from time to time it crashes me to the desktop without any notification. I have a AMD X4 3,2Ghz 8GB RAM and a HD and (i dont know exactly right know) some ATI 6900 series graphic. Game version is latest 4.0.1 or something, only thing modded are .ini fixes for terrain, wood, water, violence and gun crews. Does anyone know what could be wrong?

Uhm, the more robust heat management features of 4.11m are another thing that got me pumped, but now I really need someone to point me in the direction of a decent guide explaining mixture and prop pitch, as I've really been doing it on a hunch.

Just keep your RPM between the limits relative to prop pitch (there's usually indicators in the gauge itself) and keep an eye out for manifold pressure. Super ultra lazy basic guide:

50-70% prop pitch on economy\basic cruising, depending on aircraft and situation. 75-85% in combat, depending on aircraft and WEP setting. 90-100% on takeoff\landing. When climbing other than very gently increase pitch a bit, when diving for real decrease the pitch. Throttle between 65 to 75\80 on cruise, 80-90% in combat, 90+% only for WEP (30-90 seconds max usually) and takeoffs. Add common sense when adjusting stuff, and use gauges for extra guidance. Really depends on the plane, payload and sort of your own experience as well.

As for mixture super generalised rule: reduce it every 20% for 2-3km climbed if on manual operation, so at 2-3km and below 100% is fine, 4km-6km 80%, above 6km 60%. Increase when going downwards.

To be honest I've yet to fry a single engine in most recent 1946 patch despite tons of complaints how the game's flight model is supposedly ruined.

Uhm, the more robust heat management features of 4.11m are another thing that got me pumped, but now I really need someone to point me in the direction of a decent guide explaining mixture and prop pitch, as I've really been doing it on a hunch.

The concept is simple, it's all about RPM, as the air gets thicker or thinner at different altitudes, you may need to change the angle of attack on the prop blades to get the ideal RPM, and at higer altitudes where the air is thin, you may need to lower the mixture level to maintain optimum RPM.

Where it gets tricky is that differen't planes have different optimal RPM's, and the game doesen't really tell you what that is.

Here google is your freind, for any of the planes you usually fly, google for things like cruise RPM, climb RPM and combat RPM, and you should find the numbers you need. Then it's just a simple matter of keeping said numbers in mind as you fly, and adjusting throttle/pitch/mixture so you stay within the recommended numbers (you can exceed them for combat emergancies, but not for long, a few minutes at most, keep an aye on that Oil/EGT/Cyl temp!).

Fuel mixture is only important after 2km altitude in most planes, but a simple way of checking if you should adjust it is to just do it. Under normal low altitude condition lowering the mixture will also lower the RPM, and if that happens, you should just keep the mixure at 100%. But if lowering the mixure boosts the RPM, then it's time to adjust the mixure, find the sweetspot where you get maximum RPM, that's the correct mixture for your altitude.

It has it's share of bugs but once I flew IL2: Cliffs of Dover online I could not go back to 1946. There is some great fun to be had playing on the ATAG server & TS.

Oldih, Grobut, thanks, that's really helpful, especially the part about mixture as that was the part I never got into.

Oh, and about the RPM values — well, I can always take a peek in all the aircraft guides (the ones that came with 1946, the ones from Daidalos patches, etc.).

Himmel! What an encouraging video! I really feel like hopping back to the old IL-2 1946. I wonder if any of my friends will join me..

Thanks for the video!

edit: where's that music from?! It sounds so, so familiar (especially the last three minutes) but I just can't get it in my head!

Thanks! The music is from a variety of sources: the movies 633 Squadron and Empire of the Sun, and the video games Secret Weapons over Normandy and Medal of Honor Allied Assault. The last music clip is from MoH.

Trying this game out for the first time, got the 1946 version. The joystick I have is a years old, dusty piece of garbage so I've given up trying to play with it, ordered a new one (hope its good). From what I did play, I managed to get a kill on a zero! good thing they only take a few hits to kill. Also playing on easy mode for now till I can get my feet wet with a decent joystick. I'm really confused though about the single missions for the planes. A lot of them have a few missions, or one, but all the USN planes except for the F4F only have the 4 carrier takeoff and landing tutorial 'missions'. I'm guessing theres additional community content I have to download in order to play missions with the better USN planes.

Also annoying is friendly AI pilots talking in foreign languages (or the American ones telling me to stay on my leader, when i don't know who tf he is! Shut up already). But I think their banter mostly has no bearing on me, at least in easy mode. I've also heard bad things about Cliffs of Dover, but that subsequent patches have improved the game in a lot of aspects. Is that one worth playing?

Stay away from Cliffs of Dover. IL-2 1946 is an incredible package of really well done content with endless community content and mods to boot. Stay far far away from CoD. I paid for it and I'm never getting that $50 back for my plastic coaster!

If you want some people to fly with, hit me up some time. The game is a blast in coop.

Can't figure out how to dogfight in this game. I don't see how its possible to BnZ if you can't see anything below you! My sorties in the P-38 are laughable attempts at flying as I'm always forced to fight on the more maneuverable planes terms and I get shot down every time. I'm also experiencing a very weird physics model - when my plane hits the ground when I'm flying level but too low, it bounces off the ground and my plane suffers no damage. Is that because I have the Realistic Landings option turned off?

maybe you're supposed to fly inverted when you're stalking on someone below you and then pull up (which will make you dive on him or basically perform a split-s maneuver with an aggressive intent)? that way you'll be pulling positive g's as opposed to the negative ones which you'd be receiving if you were to simply nose-dive on him in regular flight.

i think that's related to your vulnerability option (popularly known as god mode):

A new video, hot off the presses for you all!

IL-2 1946 HSFX MOD: Sending Fritz to the Bottom! - YouTube

Me and three friends suited up for a torpedo bombing mission against Fritz shipping. All our torpedoes hit, with 2 ships sunk. Unfortunately Tiger didn't make it back to shore, and I was the only one who managed to land on the carrier successfully... lol we need some carrier landing practice as a group.

Anyway, enjoy.

When do you normally fly coop Hockey? I haven't flown coop in ages so I might take you up on that. And yes like Hockeysaid IL2 1946 is probably the best value for money of any game I've ever bought (only thing that comes close is the original Operation Flashpoint for me). The amount of content is ridiculous and the multiplayer community is STILL going strong even after a decade! (make sure to get HyperLobby if you want to play mutliplayer) If any of you have not you on here don't have this game yet I highly recommend it.

If anyone is interested in an campaign setting with all human pilots check out Ghost Skies. Join the forum if you're interested.

Most of the people involved are in a squadron (as I am), but there's also a freelance unit. Experience is a good idea though if you want to join, because a lot of the people flying have been flying for years, some since the game's original release, and some are really good.

We're flying a Burma campaign right now (Zekes and Oscars vs P40s, Hurricanes and Buffaloes, and assorted bombers), and will be doing a Kiev campaign next. Player numbers for each mission are normally 45-50. Basically the meta game consists of moving ground columns around to capture territory. Recently my side just managed to take an enemy airfield after a very blood air skirmish that ensued as our armor and infantry units were moving towards it. Enemy planes were taking off while being shelled by artillery just down the road ;). After we beat off the enemy planes we strafed out the remaining flak and defending infantry coming in at 30 meters above the deck (they can't get their guns that low).

We're flying HSFX so you'll need that. You'll need TS3 and a mic too obviously. Missions are Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday night 9:30PM EST. (sorry Euros :()

Missions run for 90 minutes, if you get killed or captured that's it for the night. If you bail over friendly territory you're out for 20 minutes, if you ditch in friendly territory you're out for 13. Basically this means that people aren't completely careless with their lives like you see in a dogfight server. It's also full real with the exception that we have the small speed/altitude display in the bottom left (so people don't have to read the confusing Japanese displays). No external views or tags or any of that nonsense though ;). So you need to be able to identify planes and use your map to get around. People don't take too well to getting shot down by friendlies :D.
