Uhh things doesn't look good in the graphics department after all these years. I hope the features will make up for it.

I agree, graphics can use some improvement.

But if the game run/works and is what it promises to be, it won't matter much.

I think it would be difficult to pull off impressive sehr erotisch war porn style graphics with such huge areas (using old IL-2 1946 as a base), notable amount of objects etc without making it massive pile of salt to optimise.

^^^Liking the German planes because they're more difficult is some of the dumbest **** I've ever heard. No one cares how big your e-penis is. That's one thing I really hate about the IL-2 community... a LOT of elitists, even more so than with RO. Actually any game that is "realistic" seems to have them which is a real shame because those tend to be the games I enjoy the most :( I'd also like someone to explain to me exactly how diving on a fighter with a huge energy advantage and killing him is harder than keeping up with someone twisting and turning like a maniac :p.

I like the German planes simply because I like having the faster fighter available, period. But I would definitely take the 25lbs spit over the 109k. But I'd take the 190A9 or D9 over either for sure. 25lbs spit is a fantastic plane though. I've heard some say they think it's overmodelled, though I don't know what this would be based on because I doubt anyone playing an IL-2 has actually flown a spit ;).

Reddog I get what you're saying, but Bnzing can be a blast. One of the 190's biggest advantage is high speed maneuvaribility. Once you hit 450+kmh you can actually outturn most fighters. Which can lead to some very interesting tactics... I've managed to get on the 6 of a plane that's supposedly a better turner in a high speed dive many times.

Not to mention you can actually make adjustments in the 190 when going really fast. I love it when some spit you're diving on thinks he can pull away at the last second when he sees you diving on him, and then wham, you nail his *** with a sharp turn (that kills your e granted, but he's dead so it doesn't matter ;))

I'm a bit suprised you like the P-47, it's basically American version of 190 (not as good though IMO). You might like the BF109G2 or F4 Reddog, they're both nearly as good turners as their spit counterparts but they're still significantly faster with better ROCs.

Exactly. And somebody who can't be bothered to figure this out is an easy button noob and despicable :p And I did not say anywhere that I like german planes, I fly them all, or rather used to. Yak7, Fw190, P-39, P-47, P-51, I-16, N17.

Supposed box-art. A shame about Ubisoft, but that was to be expected. At least Ubi is stopping the requirement to be constantly connected to the internet.

Hey all I recently bought IL2 1946 and am having some technical issues. I had owned a couple other IL2 games, but figured I would get them all for 10 bucks on Steam.

Basically I want to run the game on its highest possible settings, with the nice clouds, water, and special effects detail that you have to unlock in the .ini. I also want to run the game in a widescreen resolution (1920x1080) and have edited the ini appropriately.

I heard that you have to run the game with Open GL to have the added graphics features, but every time I start up the game it starts in Direct X. When I change to Open GL, I lose the widescreen resolution, but all the graphics features work. Why won't the game start in Open GL from the beginning? Oh and it's also no help that the il2setup.exe (actually il2set.exe on my PC) doesn't even work -- it just causes the game to start up.

If you're referring to flight basics, CR42, Ju-87 and Hurricane MkI\II are quite stable choices if you want to get the hang of it before trying something that has more temper. After you've got hang of it Bf-109E- and F- series are relatively easy to control, just be prepared to use the rudder heavily during takeoffs. Bf-109s are also nearly impossible to spin and stall violently so you can pretty much toss the aircraft around alot without any real danger as long as you have altitude (and presuming you have no opponent obviously). P-38 is also pretty reasonable choice, as it's stall and spin behaviour is very comparable to Bf-109 despite being twin-engined aircraft. Of course the later Bf-109s are also relatively easy to pick up, just bit more trickier to fly.

For easy takeoff and landing training go to the quick mission builder as the 4.10 patch added a scramble mission type. Just set mission type to scramble, pick the aircraft and you're on the runway ready for takeoff. Once you're airbourne you can fly around the airfield and then try to land whenever you feel like it.

Ah, thanks.
I first tried out the CR.38 (I think) and it was quite easy to handle, it seemed quite limited in terms of manueverability, and actually managed to stall on me when I was hardly pushing it (luckly my quick thinking saved my *** at 30m) and because of it's slow speed it was easy to land. After this, I decided to skip to the manly jet-planes (ready forget the names, though I think the Yak was one) , and those things are great fun to fly, as their manueverability is great. However, I'll have to work on landing those beasts, I always seem to smash the landing gear.

My guess is you were flying too slow or yanked the stick tad too hard at once. Biplanes are generally speaking more manouverable in classical dogfighting sense than most of later aircraft\jets, which are more manouverable horizontally. Late 30s biplanes still in service (like CR42 or I-15) are more dangerous than you may think in capable hands ;)

However, I'll have to work on landing those beasts, I always seem to smash the landing gear.

You should try land so that your IAS is under 180km\h and below, or around ~110mp\h and below by the time you make your first touchdown. Approaching at shallow angles sideways relative to the airfield and turning just as you're about to land to preserve visibility is pretty working method. You just need to ramp up throttle constantly up'n down depending on the aircraft so your speed while approaching is somewhere between 200-250km\h (125 - 160mp\h roughly), and as you're flaring down gently throttle is best to be at 0.

If that doesn't make any sense (so to speak) you should watch one of the training videos about the landing as the basic idea is pretty well brought up there.
