Its so nice when the engine explodes mid-air without warning because you werent gently enough on the throttle...
edit: and climbing to 30,000 meters just to run out of fuel and dive down at > mach 2.
Heheh I think for the first week of playing all I would do is over throttle a ME 262 up and down to get the engines to pop and watch the plane bust apart and see the engines fly off in different directions.

Can't find the ones with detailed enough information to get started though.
Anyway, which file should I open?
I've heard you could set various settings like water detail, effects and forest to use newer graphical technologies?

I just went through this last week, so I can help you out.
First off, switch to OpenGL rendering, not DirectX. The game is supposedly optimized for OpenGL, and the better effects are all OpenGL only.
To access the "perfect" settings, find a config file description (you'll need to look for yourself) or use the program IL-2 Sturmovik Stab (google it). That program allows you to set the perfect water settings (totally amazing!), the perfect forests, the dynamic lighting, etc.
I now fly at 10 meters over rivers whenever possible because the water looks so great.

By the way, is there any way to turn on the targeting reticule when it's blank as you enter the plane? About 1/3 of the planes that I pick when I join a multiplayer game have no reticule, and it's annoying. I don't see a key setting for it, but I'm hoping that there's a way to do it.

If you're used to il2 with DirectX, switching to OpenGL is going to amaze you.

Alright, I'll keep that in mind. anyone play the original-i tried yesterday and saw no servers...
if you were using the in-game browser, you'll find none no matter what version you have. there's a small possibility that there might be a few active servers for the original on Hyperlobby, but the majority of the community is playing 1946.
We can download what? AN IL2 game, lol, I dont think we could, not even for free...
I'm pretty sure you can... Not for free, for the price specified by ubi, but, as far as I'm aware, thats what some <RTR> did, and it came fully patched and everything.
