We have a right to self defense here, but you can only match the force directed at you. So unless Mr. Burglar attacks you first you are screwed and even if he does if your response overmatches his attack (like say a cricket bat vs a screw driver) you are still screwed. Also insanely enough duty of care precedent applies to intruders as well, so when Mr. Burglar slips on your steps and breaks his hip he can sue you.

I wish I were kidding.

It's exactly the same here, which is why calling the cops would be the very last thing i'd ever do (if he gets angry that i'm calling the fuzz on him and attacks me, and the court finds i was a little to overzealous in defending myself, it's me that ends up in prison!).

No thanks, my only objective would be to get him to put down the stuff he has taken, and leave my propperty never to return.

At the end of the day, i'd probably have to pay for the lock/window he has broken to invade my home myself, and be at a loss, but it beats going to jail for beeing the victim of robbery and assault, and by quite a margin!

You would have risked shooting your daughter for the sake of some silverware?
No. You missed the whole point of my post.... Its easy for one to say what they (think) they would do in a given situtation. Reality can be something entirely different. As the door to her room was adjacent to the A/C blower (the source of the noise), I was concerned for her physical saftey. As I went to investigate, the possible scenarios ran through my mind. I thought I was clear about that.

@Peter.Steele I shot IPSC years ago. I've bored enough holes in sillouettes/badguy/hostage targets and knocked down enough steel flappers to be proficient in my pistol marksmanship. Never the less, I never trained to kill bad guys in my house. It'll get your blood pumping and your mind racing.

I was hoping to impress upon everyone that drawing a weapon on someone is a little more complicated than just pointing and pulling the trigger. I would hope they would at least think about all of the consequences....But once again, my written logic skills fail me..

Yes, yes it does get your adrenaline up.

Thing about practical shooting versus target shooting ... when you're shooting for score on a bullseye, you're paying close attention to the target, viewing it for what it is, and being extremely conscious of what you're shooting at. This is a losing proposition when you're working toward the ultimate goal of being ready for a combat or defensive engagement. When you're shooting steel, whether it's just shapes or silhouettes, there's less of an emphasis on what it is you're shooting: it's just a target that's getting serviced. You have less immediate issue later on with pulling the trigger, if you have to service a moving target.

No, the logic skills didn't necessarily fail you. Thing is, most people who haven't actually done it don't have a frame of reference to understand what you're saying. How many people in this thread have actually had a firearm in their hand, going into a situation in their home where they had a reasonable belief that combat would possibly follow? I'm counting two, so far.

Our laws are seriously crooked.
If i would defend myself in the way i described earlier, i too would go to prison.
I remember this newsstory where two girls working at the cash registers at a supermarket were able to apprehend a criminal who was robbing them, using some violence.
The criminal had to do something like a days work as an apology, then he was freed from all charges. The girls on the other hand were in a lawsuit for a long, long time. It's so ridiculous i dont know whether i should laugh or cry.

In my opinion, this person (burglar, robber, and especially rapists) have no business in your home, trying to take stuff that dont belong them, threaten other people, injure them, scar them mentally etc etc, and this should be punishable. But most importantly, when being confronted with such a situation you should simply be able to defend yourself by any means necessary. Even if it means to kill the other person (Note!: defending yourself imo is not noticing a criminal in your home and shooting him outright. Take the word self-defence literally) and people should not care.
The criminal knows what he was doing and what he might get himself into, so you should not feel sorry for them at all.
To punish selfdefense is the most ridiculous thing you could do.

Besides, justice should be harsh.
Most judges just pat a criminal on the back and say "Sorry you got caught, i'll go easy on you."
And especially in the case of rapists/child molesters, these people deserve no mercy and should be lined up and shot. They should suffer. Make it sickening to the stomach, so other filth will think twice before completely destroying someones life like they do. Yet they only get a year or two, and some 'mental coaching' to make them stop having such disgusting thoughts about children. Which obviously does NOT work.
Just the thought of those people makes me cold from anger.

Completely agree. Whenever I read of women, especcially in around my age, having been raped and maybe even killed after it(sadly you hear about such things often enough in the media) I feel such anger, shooting the convicts alone probably would be too kind, I'd say torture and disgrace him for a week, then kill him.
