Make it so default chat is squad chat, and only commander and squad leader can talk outside of their squad.

This is not the way to go, why would you restrict inter-squad communications. You put all the responsibility on one person. And if that person doesn't cooperate, the rest of the squad would be unable to communicate.

Why not add some small tweaks that encourage sticking with your squad, and penalize you for wandering off to lone wolf.

Within X distance of squad leader = slight suppression resistance buff

Outside of that range you get a slight suppression debuff

Or you can cap an objective more quickly the more of your squad that are inside the objective.

Negative effects might be too much, and generally all you need to do to encourage team effort is throw players a few +10 squad points when they help a squadmate or capture an objective.

One of the biggest things that can be done would be to make the commander's command interface more intuative/streamlined. It isn't layed out very well, and giving commands to specific squads is a pain the butt. Commander's actually using the squad commands would be integral to making teamwork more rewarding. BF2 and 2142 were very straight-forward as far as opening the map, clicking on a squad, and clicking on an objective to tell them to attack/defend. To go beyond that squads that actually follow the commanders orders should recieve additional points.

I that if a lot of the community wishes is implemented the team gameplay will increase. Removal of quick bandaging, lockdown timer, ranking, skills, and unlocks, aswell as improved weaponhandling, improved movements (run, turn, aim etc), the old command system from Ro ost (along with the new one) and so on will probably change the gameplay because then you wont be dependent on quick reflexes, unlocks, or anything like that.

I believe that people only work as a team if they have to.

Battlefield has always had a decent squad setup, but no one really uses it.

But that isn't the game's fault. There is a lot of room to improve the current system. It may come down to how seriously clans want squads to be enforced on thier server. A lot of BF2, Arma II, and such servers try to require players to actually join a squad and work together. Those games both have squad/command systems that operate more effectively than RO2's, and clans have taken it upon themselves to say, "If you want to play here, play the way the game was intended."

Yes, very true. But you need to remember that most clans also enforce Teamspeak/Ventrilo for proper events or organised missions, or to be part of the clan. It's much easier to get semblance of teamwork when you can relay/receive orders, information and basic battlefield awareness on the fly.

Simply having a squad to join isnt IMO enough to get the most out of it. It certainly wouldn't hurt to have a decent squad/command template to atleast encourage teamwork and inter squad cooperation though. Project Reality apparently has a good squad system in place.

Well, there's a number of features I'd like to suggest, as that is probably the biggest problem I have right now with the game.

1. Increase the distance at which the name tags disappear for your squad (you should be able to recognize people you know even in the distance) - the distance right now is a joke. At least change it in the tactical view or make it show up if you're looking directly at a player.
2. Make it so you can't chose your spawn point, instead, every squad is assigned to a spawn, and whenever you spawn, you spawn with your squad. Implementing this might dramatically improve teamplay, as you'll be playing near your squad mates most of the time, you'd learn their names, etc.
3. Don't open new squads until the already open ones are full
4. Streamline the squad selection screen, make it the default one in Realism mode.
5. Show your fire team members on the minimap with a different color (it works for name tags, but not for the minimap).
