It's not the $19.99 that keeps ppl from playing RO.
In fact to some extent paying for a game increases the time you allow yourself to get into it ( an important factor in RO)
i've rejected countless free mods, often unfairly I guess, on the basis of 1st impressions over an hour or so.

One thing that may have helped phaps would have been the introduction of different game modes (this could mean single player campaign as suggested here- but phaps simpler things like the introduction of a 'Search and destroy' varient wouldn't have done any harm)
However the sort of people who could have done stuff like this- presuming they wished to - were tied up with the mods soon after the retail release, and will be for still some time yet i imagine.

I have agreed with others about server's choices of rotation and the possible need for more of the smaller maps that seem under-represented but this has all been discussed in other threads.

... Red Orchestra got a LOT of publicity (at least, here in the US) when it was released, and was consistently reviewed positively. Guest passes and free weekends only continued that trend, and I would guess that most people who are interested have tried it.
....

I'm surprised - so in the early days of retail was the US playerbase pretty large then?
