...called "clips" in Killing Floor?

I thought Tripwire knew better.

It's all over games. The terms have been used incorrectly for so long that it's now common for them to be interchangeable.

At least the guys in-game know the difference.

"New mag!"

Except when they're loading the lever action or shotguns...

I think im right here.... correct me if I'm wrong.

A clip just holds the ammunition as a sorting/ease of movement device.

A magazine holds the ammunition, but is also inserted into the gun?

That's because the M1 Garand has an internal magazine, which is loaded by the clips.

A magazine has a feeding spring, a clip does not. Clips are used for storage and charging of the magazine in the action. What people call "stripper clips" are actually not clips but more appropriately referred to as chargers.

That first picture has clips on the left, chargers in the middle with magazine attachment, and magazines on the right.

Ah, but the M1 does in fact have an internal magazine, like the K98 or the Mosin-Nagant. The clip is still used to load a magazine.

The only real difference is that a magazine has a mechanism to feed the ammunition, while a clip does not.

Clips are basically a metal clip (hoho) used to conveniently load a column of individual cartridges into the magazine, which is what actively stores and then feeds ammunition into the barrel for firing.

On modern assault and battle rifles, the magazine is similar to a clip in that individual rounds are loaded into it prior to the magazine being inserted into the magazine well under the firing chamber. The difference is that while a clip is simply helpful for storing ammunition and loading a weapon, an external magazine is an essential, albeit removable, part of the weapon.

M1 garand uses clips, and are inserted into the gun...

The Garand is a bit of a freak in that regard, it's the only weapon that comes to my mind where the clip is supposed to stay in the magazine durring opperation (there may be others, but i can't think of any right now), it's certainly not a common design by any means.

WW2 movies and books may also be the reason "clip" became synonimous with "magazine" in the mainstream, it was a war full of clips, and the first to make it into mainstream media in such a big way.

The debate itself is fair enough, but in a forum for a game where you annihilate inhuman, genetic hybrids it's maybe a touch out of place and I can safely say I never noticed the faux pas in between all the maiming, claret and death :D

Yes but Tripwire's last game was really, really good with most of the firearm details, so it seems like they slipped up a bit here. :p

I am a huge Red Orchestra fan but don't think it matters, do you?

KF is fun, be it clips, magazines or bananas, I don't mind ;)

That's the point, the game was designed by gun nuts; with realistic gun appearances, iron sights, animations and sounds. It just seem weird that something like calling magazines "clips" would be in there.

Admittedly most people won't care, but it can be very rage-inducing for others. "Clip" annoys me every time I come across it.

The simplest way to distinguish between a clip and a magazine is such: a "clip" stores rounds for easy loading into a magazine, whereas a magazine stores rounds ready to be actually fired by the weapon. Detachable box magazines are just magazines that can be easily separated from the weapon they're a part of, as opposed to the internal magazines used by, for example, most shotguns and many rifles.
