I really think almost all the games I've played since 2008 or so have been a massive step down from the golden oldies. So much so that I have sold my Ps3 and uninstalled steam.

There are a few gems I have enjoyed - Red Dead Redemption was pretty good (but only if you turned off auto aim you sissies), Bioshock, Fallout 3 wasn't too bad (VATs is a god damn joke though, that got boring after 20 minutes), I'll mention Borderlands later.... but all in all I generally feel ripped off when I pay for a game.

Linear gameplay - Compared MGS4 to MGS1, 2, or 3..... It just BAFFLES me that people think 4 is the best one. You pretty much walk in a straight line for the entire game... There's no camo or hiding or anything - just prop against a wall and automatically blend in. Cinematic moments (like crawling on the ground while dying.... getting attacked by mindless waves of banshee cyborgs...) are contrived and played out the exact same way every time. The Drebin system was a joke. Even though it contained a bunch of different guns - they really all functioned the same and served the same purpose. And farming soldiers for points does not add depth to a single player stealth game - it adds **** gameplay that isn't fun. Call of Duty wants you to press square to repel a dog or press X to watch something blow up? BORING! Far Cry 2 wants you to hit square so you can watch yourself suffer from malaria? Seriously?

In Mass Effect 2 I found some thugs that wanted to assassinate the colony ruler chick.... Seeking to get some power in this colony I decided to go warn her of the plot. She told me to 'deal with it'. I went and found the thugs - and after choosing the dialogue option "I will kill you!" it literally just showed a video clip of me blasting the dudes with my pistol. I didn't even get to shoot them myself IN A GOD DAMN SHOOTING GAME! I spent 25 minutes playing the game to not actually engage in any real gameplay? (and the gameplay itself was nothing to write home about)

Content - It's lacking. You can pay $60 for a game that takes 6 hours and is chock full of the aforementioned cinematic moments (which will be exactly the same the next time you play through, even if it is on Hard). Most MP shooters ship with 10 maps.

Co-Op - Does this exist anymore? Do kids not go to each others houses these days? Borderlands was a decent game - but it had split screen. Me and my brother got to relive our childhood of sitting there and working towards a common goal. I know some games like Gears of War have it, but I don't enjoy that at all.

Server Issues and Lag - I understand this is an overwhelming issue that plagues everything on the internet - but games will sacrifice all optimization and opt for a half *** launch full of lag as long as the game looks polished on the outside.

Biting off more than they can chew - All these game companies sit down and re-invent the wheel every time they launch a game. They make a new engine or they build an entire new physics system, they spend tons of time on super sweet art direction and music direction, they hire a celebrity for the voice. The result is a stunning intro, a super sweet opening mission, a flawless presentation of an epic world that you will now virtually becoming a part of, a sweet transition from basic game play you are familiar with into more specified mechanics that you think will evolve into a truly robust and engaging experience............. And then you do the same **** for 3 hours and fight a boss and watch a ****ty contrived ending and it's over. They start carving a masterpiece with a chisel from the finest marble then realize the dead line is in 2 weeks and they won't get paid if its not done.

Crap game play - This is really just an opinion and has no foundation in fact.... but pretty much every sequel has fallen short of it's predecessor - From Metal Gear Solid to Call of Duty to Battlefield to Red Orchestra to Turok to Perfect Dark to Fallout to Mario to Castlevania to Metroid to Super Smash Bros to Armored Core to Deus Ex to Zelda to Grand Theft Auto to Starfox to Wolfenstein to Unreal Tournament to Red Faction to Tom Clancey games to 007.... hell I even feel like Street Fighter got worse! Really the only series that has noticeably improved is Madden, and I don't like football. Guitar Hero is okay I guess, but I spend 1 or 2 hours a day playing a real guitar so I have no need for that.

I remember when I would walk into a Blockbuster and pick up some game I had never heard of.... Armored Core? Wow this game is great! Goldeneye? Got old after the first 3,000 hours. Turok? Never heard of him but this is incredible! Wolfenstein: ET? A free download can't possibly have good multiplayer! Mystical Ninja? looked stupid - but wow here's like 40 hours of gameplay with different weapons and characters and an explorable world and boss fights! Breath of Fire 3? Never played the first two but sure I'll take 100 hours of excellent adventure! Hexen? This look like the 80's.... this can't possi- MOM HOLD ME!

You know if all these iGeneration ****tards weren't so preoccupied with HD high resolution multi-monitor 3D bloom effect and contrived repetitive single player we could have a multiplayer FPS that has -

-Tons of content - Maps, weapons, items, skins, trains, planes, boats, game modes, classes,
-Tons of custom options for gameplay - Realism, load outs, ammo, gravity, lethality,
-Very little lag
-Dedicated servers
-Perfect hit detection
-Perfect bullet physics
-Perfect rag dolls
-Perfect sound
-Perfect server browser and features
-Perfect organizing features for friends, squads, and clans
-Active interaction with the environment
-Destructible environments, bullet penetration, breathing system, cover system, wounding system, etc.
-70 or 80 or 100 player servers
-Large maps
-An inventory system
-Mods - That casual people will actually be able to work on extensively and not have to study forums to understand
-No bugs
-Optimized to run on anything (why WoW is successful)
-Direct community initiated input to resolve issues

But instead, year after year, billions and billions of dollars are circulated ON RECYCLED GARBAGE!!!

I feel you bro.

Actual case in point would be a video game from 6 years ago now Alliance the Silent war. Game had over 200 guns and spanned over 100 years. So you could in multiplayer pitch a seal team from the 80's versus a 20 ww1 riflemen. ( that was one of their examples ).

What happened to it? well the team got bought up to redo graphics for second life, the game for people who fail so hard, they need to live virtually.

They did recently return to working on the game, I hope they are successfull with it, but its 5 years late ...

We are due for a new gaming crash and by the way borderland was crap.

innovative gaming stop around 2004 sure some title come out here and there that are potable but most of the time it's trash that where they spend more money on hyping the game than creating it.

Also you didn't mention the greatest game of all time... Starsiege :tribes so no +1 for you

Very interesting post and I agree !

This is why my consol gaming ended after SNES.

PC's still have good games... mostly in the strategy department...
For example Starcraft and Company of Heroes.

As for shooters, it went downhill.
I loved the classic doom, Duke3d and the others on the same engine.
I liked the fallout series... but they are too easy, even on hardcore.

Loved quake1...

All the rest... meh.

RO2 is still pretty good and I think it will only get better with time.

I usually don't read long posts. But I respect the Griz, so I read it.

I agree with it all.

I hardly buy any games anymore and I look for all the information I can before I buy. Then some pimple popping teenybopper on here tells me that I shouldn't do that...
The problem is all these companies know how to take advantage of their market; and they will leave players like you and me in the dust if it means they can exploit more profit.

I attribute all this garbage to the inferiority of the 360. More customers own one and are willing to dish out $60 bucks a pop to play games that end in...idk...6 hours...(LA Noire) Console's aren't just holding back PC at this point, there actually ruining gaming all together. Games became $60 because of 360. 360 will cause online to never be free again. Quality is held back by 6 year old technology. etc etc etc PC games in the old days was a deep space where developers would go to truly reach passed the possible and create games that truly innovated and went beyond what anyone had seen before. Now all they do is recreated either call of duty, halo, or something completely generic, linear, or closed off as long as it makes them more money.

This is what happens when game developers is owned by publishers. They demand their games stay main stream so they get the most money.I miss the days when games was challenging and yes I preferred Morrowind over Oblivion because it had no fast travel. Then again I miss old pc games on DOS like the adventure games that actually made you use your brain to beat.Or old SSI war simulations or flight simulators their game manuals read like a Tolkien novel. For me them was the glory days of gaming.

Some older console games almost reached that level now games is made to be a easy mode walk through. That's why I like RO it doesn't follow the mainstream and developer wise is old school type devs.

Totally with you, but alas the money isn't in the niche, as I'm sure you know, and I am gutted aswell.

Not sure how old you are, but I remember having the Quake 1 and Duke3d sharewares, and having endless hours of awe-stuck gameplay.

I think the current climate of games has made a lot of people suspicious buyers. Skyrim? I'd love to buy it but we all know it will be a DLC laden cash cow. Hell, even Guild Wars 2 looks like every MMO players dream come true (I'm a GW1 player), but after numerous pre-order nightmares, I won't even be getting that until I've seen if it works or not.]

Anyway, the obvious issue is the consoles. The gaming customer has changed a lot in the past ten years, and it's a *****.

Yeaaaaaaa buddy, Breath of Fire 3 was one of my favourite childhood games. I replayed about 3/4 of the way through it recently and tbh was pretty bored, stopped playing to keep hold of the good memories.

Agree with your points, gaming is pretty lackluster (for the most part) these days. Although I really liked MGS4 and, having replayed MGS1 just before getting into 4, thought the gameplay was just fine and the cinematics were really great. Shrug.

Also Baldurs Gate 2 with a truckload of AI, graphics and content mods is definitely worth the replay.

TBH, the complexity involved in making games is part of the decline imo. The last thing we need is games taking even more processing/graphics power so you can pack even more pixels into everything. It makes development take too long with people demanding better and better presentation so 90% of the development time is spent on visuals. I think its healthy to keep using the same technology personally

Part of the gaming boom in the 90's was how you could get by with a few artists and a couple programmers. Now you need way more people and money just to make a basic game with a basic graphics engine. People spend more time on the looks rather than the design.

Consoles definitely haven't helped, I'm not saying that. They have held PC gaming back because the games are sold to a different demographic now. It just isn't economically viable for people to make PC games now too, with critical acclaim not being enough to make a decent profit. So many good companies stopped trading even after releasing great games, or get swallowed up by the big publishers then ruined.

i blame consoles for screwing up the excellent PC scene we had. Every game is aimed towards the easy availability of the consoles, they said after Battlefield Bad Company 2 was finished that that game was a sidestep in the BF series and that Battlefield 3 is gonna be a true Battlefield game, NOT, it has become Bad Company 2.5

Even RO2 has console influences, (don't deny it, you know its there).

I agree 100%, and I think many do even though they can't put as well as you.

I also don't think consoles are to blame especially, it's just the general trend of making a quick buck (big publishers come in here) vs making games because you have the urge to. It's often why indie games are better. It's why I hate the excuse "game development is a business", that mentality destroys games-as-art before it can even be born.

Also don't forget that big titles (better for a "quick-buck") target broader audiences who, generally speaking, don't mind low quality as long as it's flashy. Big games are marketed to younger and more immature audiences, and this has an effect on what the next kind of game will be.

I agree fully with the original post of this thread but this is imo what killed PC's... Consoles.
They became the mainstream gaming media with profits faaaaar bigger then any PC title can only dream off... which turned the gaming industry away from PC gaming for the biggest part and made them cater their games to the audience of consoles... kids

I'm 23 at the moment and even I sometimes get the feeling: "Did I really become to old for games?". I mean most games I play turn out to be just the same old hold your hand game with rewards and imaginary levels to artificially extend the gameplay of said generic game, just to try and keep it "intresting"... Which doesn't work for me because I don't give a crap about dogtags, medals, achievements, ... I'm not a 12y old kid whom expects rewards for everything he does (which really is the mentality amongst kids these days)

I agree with Grizzly. Gaming has changed so much and so did the people.

I mean, there are still some pearls out there but 90% of the stuff released in the last couple of years were garbage.

Some examples of game series that were good but turned out to be crap later on:

- Far Cry: the 1st was innovative and interesting. The 2nd one was dumbed down and ****
- Civilization series: The first 3 were awesome. So was 4 for a part, but DLCs. Oh my god, DLCs for a complex game that added stuff that was included in the previous games. Civ 5: maximize profits, cause idiot gamers of today buy anything anyhow
- Mafia. Oh man, how I loved the first game. And oh man, what a disappointment Mafia 2 was. Oh. Were there DLCs on Mafia 2? I guess so. (I know they were, I am just saying why it was such a disappointment)

Some examples of game series that are still good:

- Arma Series: Thanks to the modding community, this is like my sandbox to play in.
- Total War series: Empire & Napoleon aside, Shogun 2 regained my trust. It's still challenging and gives you so many choices for different approaches.
- Silent Hunter: Maybe the most bug-infected series of all times and Ubisoft is a gangster company. But at the moment, Silent Hunter V with mods is just a good game. The only reason why I accepted the Ubilauncher **** is because Silent Hunter does not have competition and I am a submarine-sim lover

Any games that are related to highly DLC-infected are ignored by me. I am NEVER buying any DLC and games that give the impression that are missing content that should've been there and might create DLC in the future are on my ignore list.

Unfortunately, when I am reading the comments on many forums about games, I see the stupidity of today's gaming generation. When I tell them that CoD used to have custom made maps and not 4 maps for USD 15 mappacks, there are many that think I am dreaming or telling lies. Sad but true...

No MMO has come close to Ultima Online yet. All complete trash now imo

Amen. UO was a freakin real world. I actually thought EQ came kinda close - it had immense spectrum and felt living and breathing. The teleportation nexus (don't have to travel), Bazaar system (don't have to trade), and grind zones (skip level 20-30 so you can access our expansion content faster) really killed the entire game and paved the way for the WoW model. Also EQ2 is another example of a streamlined and dumbed down sequel.

I also thought Star Wars Galaxies was kinda fun. It was a terrible game but having a massive sandbox with player cities and stuff was cool. Of course, after the "upgrades" I quit within a day lol

Maybe dude... I'm skeptical of any MMO that spent a good portion of development on story and voice acting instead of end game content and side quests

I feel like I could write something eloquent regarding a social trend towards instantly gratifying moments of hyper sensory stimulation but I'm kinda tired so ehhh... Whether it be fear, sex, death, ownage, beauty, or comedy... From Avatar to Rebecca Black to Dude check out my 31 killstreak video on xbox live to borderline softcore porn on ABC family shows... There's something happening to the human brain because of the digital era, and I don't know if I'm going to be able to fit in with the changes. People NEED to be so stimulated they can't contain themselves.

I agree.... At this point it's not just the industry or the trends... It's the human brain itself. I consider myself old school and pretty liberated from technology but here I am on the forums... and I get kinda pissed when I have to walk somewhere deprived of my iPod.

Also agree with you on Civilization, Mafia, and Arma. I am actually looking forward to Arma 3... but I am expecting a buggy launch and other **** that shouldn't happen in the first place.
