Running a server, using workshop maps, works. Mostly. Apparently, I need the desktop Steam client to download workshop maps. When I don't, the server console outputs
Code:
Warning: Warning, Workshop: Unable to download workshop item [Map ID]
Tried starting
Code:
steamcmd +login anonymous
before starting KFServer.exe, same result. The warnings disappear when I start the desktop Steam client before starting the server.

How can I get workshop maps without the desktop Steam clientß

You don't install maps via SteamCMD.

Find workshop map id via steam workshop (for example for KF1 West London ID - 733191110
Code:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=[B]733191110[/B]
). Then add your map in KFEngine.ini - detailed instructions you can find in kf2 wiki - https://wiki.killingfloor2.com/inde...loor_2)#Setting_Up_Steam_Workshop_For_Servers

I got that far and am stranded with the problem I've described above, unless Steam is running KFServer throws errors when downloading the map itself.

How do you run your server? Via .bat file?

Steam Client is not required in any way to run kf2 server.

If server would throw any issues with custom map, you would get in console information like:
Code:
Checking item 13456789784 for updates
Item state is X.

I don't get it, now it works without any Steam running, maybe I've hit some other effect and it didn't/did work more or less by chance and that was more of a coincidence than causality. Gonna do a more scientific aproach.

There are conflict with the server and Steam running on same machine. Usually you DO NOT want Steam to run with the server and if you follow the Wiki everything works.
