Let me think. The last time a company gave me sth for free was: NEVER
Nah, there's a fair few examples of companies releasing games for free once they were past their viable lifespan. id Software & Parallax Software had a habit of even putting out the source code for their games...having an interesting effect of extending the lifespan (people are -still- making Doom variants)

That said, I don't think putting RO1 out for free will do TWI any favors. It's quite old, and looks it, and assuming there's actually anyone still playing RO1, I'm not sure they'd like the brief influx of freebies. The time to do this as a marketing stunt would have been a month before RO2 released.

Give people an original offering.

RO2 is a copy of CoD, and MW.

My opinion is that the game would do much better if it was different.

...Oh the inevitable CoD disparage. Basically, what you are saying is the same as saying "X band's old stuff was awesome, but their new album may as well be Nickelback".

As for the OP, I would say that a couple more free weekends, well spaced and coupled with a special, does the trick. Maybe making RO1 something like $4.99 on Steam could help (if anyone still plays it?). The fact is that this game will never have anything close to the numbers big titles get, but seeing 5000 players online during peak hours would be cool.
