Cover and concealment is great because it allows people to duck away if they are being shot at to be able to defend themselves. However in Roost there is so much cover it blocks people their vision over longer stretches of terrain, so that for instance Rifleman cannot make use of their full range simply due to having too many things in the vision.

Especially roads in the game often have many flipped over trucks, sandbag barricades, stacks of wood. Stopping the ability of looking far into the distance for rifleman.

Odessa is a good example of it having a barricade every like 5 meters in the middle of the road
Spoiler!

It would be nice if the amount of stuff on the roads would be a bit closer to realistic allowing rifleman to utilize their range. That doesn't mean there shouldn't be cover and concealment but it should primarily be at the sides of a road. If a truck driver gets hit with a bullet, there is a fair chance he'll crash into a wall at the side of a road. If a building collapses or gets hit it generally will fall at the side of the road. And as long as roads are in your property you would want to have them open for transportation.

For instance here is a picture of a street with a lot of cover and concealment on the side but you can clearly see from one end to the other.

Warning it got some dead soldiers in it.
Spoiler!

So this brings me to my question, how much concealment and cover will there be in RO2 on the roads.

I like schutzesepp' maps especially his later ones where you can play on 2 flanks instead of only linear progression like parizerplats. But I think that many of them really need to be played with large player amounts to not feel empty.

So while being great maps for rifleman I don't know if its that well for cqc. The old Berlin from the mod would perhaps be a better example, a really small map with great fighting inside buildings for smg's but long open areas and roads for the rifleman.

I can add to this that longer ranges will mean more firing to surpress so that you can move closer or flank. ( A good thing )

Yup, can't disagree with anything in the OP, cover placed on actual war footage can be only good for the aesthetics of the game.

Ps. Zets, hadn't you created a similar thread some time ago? :p

I agree, cover should not decrease your vision range. Great post.:IS2:

Well, it does mirror my opinions and we/others have discussed it elsewhere.

Simply put, it would be a shame to see clutter/cover placed in a map COD style. If it was there or looks like it logically would fit, fine, that's ok. But putting cover (boxes, sandbags etc) in the middle of a street (for example) just to make it easier for attackers when you know the defenders would not do this doesn't sit quite right with me.

Can you tell that I prefer using a bolt action rifle in game? :D

Well the idea of cover is basically that it lets you advance upon your enemy. too much cover lets you advance easily, but also lets the defenders move up, so its one of those two edged swords. Here is where there is a twist ( yes this is coming to a point ). Surpression is a teamwork equivalent to cover. so with a a realistic level of cover, or atleast lesser than you will find in most stock RO maps, you can make teamwork mandatory in one more way.

Compound that with a working suppression system, and machineguns that will actually be usefull ( There were a few guys who got good with RO MG's, not many though, its regular to join a server with noone using MG ) And you are then presented with maps that require more effective teamwork in order for anything to be achieved. That in my opinion, is what the game should aim for.

( oh yeah and it also gives us Bolties more room to shine all over your face!)

the thing for me is if you want you can obtain the same amount of cover by simply placing cover at the sides. Which happens to be the most realistic location where cover would be at a road.

This allows the mapper to have as much cover as he wants while rifleman can look at long range.
