it seems to be inferior to the shotguns in every way... a "joke" weapon at best.

I'd put it slightly above the dual 9mms.

Think of it like the flak cannon in ut. Those nails bounce meaning in small areas its quite deadly but pretty pointless in open maps.

I've not used it much, but I'm guessing it shines a lot more on earlier levels, where you have the speed advantage and can move in and out of close range of the zeds a lot more easily, and place your shots better? On HoE I prefer to keep them at arms length a lot more.

This is the best answer we can give.

I do but even on bioticslab I find the pumpy far superior
That is due to the range you're shooting it at. I must admit the Nailgun has some serious spread on it and may need a slight lowering but make sure you only use it in close combat and confined areas. SO far the best map i've seen for it is KF-Wretched. The pump shotgun and HSG shotgun are both designed for damage on the ranged attacks, whereas the other shotguns are based on speed or pure damage which needs you to be closer.

It works well for me in hallways that end/hook because the nails come back and do more damage.

I find it rather pointless as well.

I always use the HSG + Hunting shotgun for maximum firepower when I play as support.

9mm to kill the lone zeds, HSG to kill large groups and the hunting shotgun to take down anything that's too strong for a single shot or two from the HSG. Then back to the 9mm to clean up the lone zeds again.

I, myself, am reluctant to use the HSG-1 since the 6 block weight, longer range due to tighter spread, fast fire-rate, full-clip magazine reload, and near pump/combat shotty damage is just too good to be fun.

It's the clip reload that does it for me. I wouldn't take a 3 second reload on a trashkiller.

Particularly when my secondary weapons are either the HSG (which isn't a great trashkiller in sustained numbers) or the AA12 (which also has a 3 second reload on it).

I personally find the KSG (idc, I'm still referring it to the KSG like in the mod because HSG already means hunting shotty) to be pretty useful during "on the move" play or when a little bit of versatility is called for. It has some clear pros and cons and it's a well-balanced weapon for the most part.

It just needs its prices switched with the Combat Shotgun. That way for the balancing of the shotguns, TWI would have hit two birds with one stone. The advantages presented by the KSG will be worth the extra couple hunded quid, and the combat shotty will remain competitive. It just needs its ammo price brought in line with the pumpy, and to have its reload speed increased just a bit.

Though I still can't think of why anyone would use Vlad outside of really cramped conditions (office area in Departed for example). I think it should have a magazine capacity of 10, at least IMO. Cos even in those cramped conditions I'd still prefer any other shotgun instead, vlad doesn't have enough nice things going for it.

Ed: Though there is one thing that I can think of about vlad that makes it useful - it's effective against mobs that include crawlers. When I used Vlad, the first thing I did was shoot down at the crawlers so the ricochet kills the clots afterwards.

what about giving the vlad more nails per shot to reinforce the chaotic ricochet style of play.

I was a bit disappointed when I saw the Nailgun, I expected like a Paslode 900600, a high cap semi auto weapon with a long reload (loading nails + "fuel cell"). Although, both the Buzzsaw Bow and Vlad remind me of UT... the Ripper and Flak Cannon, respectively. Despite the controversy over the former, I think they're both rather unique weapons. It seems the best way to use Vlad is to have the Zed(s) packed in between you and a wall, so that the nails not only hit the Zed going through it, but also a lot of them on the bounce back.

are you saying you should fire it into the wall instead of into the zeds?
