My LAN buddies and I are all considering pre-ordering this game to play offline at LANs. Does Killingfloor allow us to do this and how will the game experience be changed with perks and such being only for online play.

i've yet to encounter an online game that didnt support LAN (except maybe WoW?)

RO is LAN aswell -- no reason as to why you shouldn't be able to LAN-party it up at the all-nighters.

It might be that even if you are playing on LAN, you have to be online, and it uses your steam info to determine what perks you have, but you won't be able to unlock more so as to stem off people using dubious means to generate perks and also to keep people from using the offline mode trick that worked for CSS (dunno if it still does, probably does) to play the game with the same account on 6 different computers. I dunno, this is probably something someone from TW's gonna have to cover. Perks in the original mod were based on CD key and server, but that's changed completely for retail.

If your game is unable to communicate with the Steam servers, then your Perks will not be available. This certainly does not mean that you can't play and enjoy the game at a LAN party. Much of our testing has been with Perks off to make sure the game is still balanced and fun. And it sure as hell is! =)

I really hope you guys decide to change that. I know it's part of your anti-piracy stance to offer things you need to be connected and validated for.....but it feels a little crappy to know if Steam does go down, we can't use what we've effectively paid AND played to get.

I really hope you guys decide to allow us to save perks locally. It's not like you have leaderboards or MP that would make someone "cheating" to get perks that big of a deal. I hope you guys revisit this decision in the future.

Put another way....CoD 4 has competitive multiplayer, and the farming of perks, level and xp was a non-issue to them. In a purely co-op environment, does it really matter for KF that perks are so sacred?

We believe that the Perks are in fact "sacred", as we want it to be a badge of honor in the game to have the higher level Perks. We know that as soon as one person found out how to max out their Perks, the whole internet would know, and the incentive to earn Perks would be gone. The only truly secure way to handle it is to require an online connection to utilize the Perks system.

It's not a *huge* deal because Steam rarely does go down....but you are kind of stripping ~30% of the game's interest out of a dedicated LAN party. A small sacrifice but....well, I've never been one for the "badge of honor" in MP games. I much more interested in what it does for me in game, not out. I can see your rationale, I just hope it changes. This is going to be one of those things that the larger gaming public (once KF launches) are probably going to have a very large bone to pick with.

We know that as soon as one person found out how to max out their Perks, the whole internet would know, and the incentive to earn Perks would be gone.

While that may be true for some, I think you guys are disproportionally worrying about cheaters and people who need instant gratification. I may be naive, but I think most gamers enjoy the journey just as much as the final destination.

Now, if you're worried about all this because of future plans.....I'll just shut up.

We appreciate your understanding. We may be wrong, wouldn't be the first time nor the last, but we'll see how things go. For now, this will be the way of things and we'll listen to the community about it in the future.

Good move and thanks for thinking like this. To me they're 'sacred' as well and I would find it a bad experience if Perks were so easily hackable and every second person was maxed out too soon. So as long as it's tied to Steam then great. :) I've a feeling the ones against it would be the ones most likely to find ways to...edit their perks.

The people who want to LAN can do so without them.
