How do you call off a called in artillery strike?

As a squad leader and a tank commander I have had occasions when I called in a strike on - say a IS2 or massed t-34s and then saw them knocked out before the artillery fired off. Same with calling it in on Germans. My question is -

How do you call off an artillery strike?
I hate to use them up when they are no longer needed...

Whenever I'm in a situation which has my team advancing into arty I called, I simply switch to the other team. This will cancel your previous arty, although at a loss of a future arty strike. (even if the shells didn't fall, it still counts as a called strike) After you switch sides once, simply return to your team and hope the Commander position is still open.
