that way, in a good team group, the radio-man should be next to the commander in order to use arty without running all the way back into a radio station.

Just a thought:)

Portable field radios were used by both sides at the time of Stalingrad.

But how portable those radios really were? As I have understood, the radios that the Germans and especially Soviets used were still very cumbersome and awkward and not that kind of radios one could easily carry on back in combat.

They were indeed awkward pieces of equipment to carry into a battle but also were very useful for coordinating artillery and vehicles on the battlefield. In game terms it would not be difficult to make the radio operators both realistic in utility and disadvantages. For example it would be quite useful to call in artillery support near the front lines rather than running back to a radio, although it would be risky as the radio operator would move slower and may become an easy target. The class would also be limited to one per team and would require team work to use properly.

Unfortunately we haven't done the research yet for the Soviet portable radios and operators. Admittedly much more is known right now about the German Torn. Fu. G:

Usually FO teams, forward air controllers or other people who usually would have radio around aren't really expected to be dashing and spriting all over the place like it's the end of war sales and weapons are only for self defence so the overall mobility is not as limited as one would expect. Of course it's still not that comfortable.

One compromise for radist could be standard rifleman with less ammo, no grenades\other fancy and faster stamina drain (or something similiar) stuff from gameplay perspective.

I don't want to see the radio man in a "squad", I want to seem him with the commander , unless the commander has his own radio, in which this makes no sense.

Ugh, artillery, my most hated enemy...

You sure it's going to be good having the radios as portable? I mean a two man team, officer + radio operator, could just hide in a bush somewhere and pour arty everywhere without ever being seen.

I do like the idea, but I don't think it would be necessary on all maps. I think something like this would be cool for larger maps where it would take a long time for the commander to get to a radio. The radioman could be, in effect, in a "Commander squad" and would be able to spawn near the commander like he is a squad leader.

Of course there is nothing you could really do to force radiomen to stick with the commander, but if a special icon indicating the position of the radioman were to show up on the commander's tactical view and map, at least it would offer an alternative to running all the way back to a static radio.

indeed, in DH it's usually quite hard to get the commander and radio man together.

and you can't always see your next target, which means moving together which can make you easy targets.

If there is a radioman class ever implemented, be it RO2 or a mod, I'd hope they have the same equipment as a Rifleman, save the radio, so that there would be no advantage combat-wise between a rifleman and a radioman, hell make him slower (more equipment) so he's less effective in combat than a rifleman. This way only people who know what they are doing would use the Radioman class, if not, they're better off taking the Rifleman class...

Good point!
