How about manual tank gearboxes?

I know there were such threads some time ago, but now, after the release of tank videos, maybe it's the right time to discuss this idea again.
In RO tank driving required only limited skill. Basically it was all about choosing the right path, avoiding obstacles and listening to tank commander.

In reality tank driver had to change gears to prevent engine from stopping or overheating and to get the best possible power/speed.
IMO there should be choicde to use manual gearbox. It should be more effective (better speed etc.) than "auto" one, but require some skill and experience to use properly. I think it wouldn't be that hard to implement.

What's your opinion fellow forum members?

I like it, and i already used that in BE. So....TWI has modelled the entire interior parts of tanks....i suppose that logically we will be able to use them, including the gears, brakes, the various pedals, the various indicator (RPM/engine temperature/oil temperature/ground pressure/speed etc etc)

I would rather go with something easier, like we have in player person movement where you have prone, crouch, walk and run.
Same keys could be assigned to tank movement speeds.

I'm not so sure about this. Once you're used to it, driving manual transmission just comes as a kind of second nature. Tanks aren't sports cars and the amount of extra speed/accelleration you'd be able to squeeze out of it by "optimizing" your shifting would be negligable.

For this reason, I think it's one of those "too much work for not enough payoff" situations as far as coding goes. Should stay automatic for now. Maybe as an extra down the line.

I recall Wilsonam mentioned they played around with this ROOST before, but found it too clunky.

He also mentioned, the ROOST tanks already have simulated transmission, you just don't have a say in what gear you're in.

I'd assume the same for ROHOS. It would be nice if TWI gave an option for manual transmission for those that want it.

Edit: Look at the latest tank interview video with Ramm. At 0:38, your driver avatar works the clutch and shifts gears with the right hand.

It's not a question of racing or performance. It's simply a question of realism.

The manual gear, the manual engine start, the working instrumentation etc will add more realism to the game. Taking off this elements will take off realism.

Bolt-action rifles need (since original RO) manual reload. So, remove this function, 'cause everyone is fast in clicking mouse after every shot.....what a stupid reasoning :D

I would like this... its not like it will make the game hard.

Just press 1,2,3,4. Or hold shift and then press 1,2,3,4
It should not be hard to add, and if it makes that game to hard for you well...
thats just sad. I think its a good idea, will make it less boring for drivers.

Well, combined with the fact that you will be able to interrupt actions in RO2, then yeah, it is a good reason.

Didn't we have a thread suggesting this before?

I think I remember saying yeah I'd like to have manual gears as long as I can put it in neutral, rev it up, and then dump it to pull tank-wheelies. :p

Manual bolt wasn't in the earlier betas, but it is in ROOST. I don't think it was put in just to be more real, but because it served a functional game play purpose. Specifically, people were complaining about not being able to melee / stab right after firing their rifle, since it would auto bolt. Secondly, it was helpful for scoped rifles to keep an eye on the target after firing the round to see if you him them or not, or where to adjust your aim as you can see the bullet hit-puff.

If manual gears go in, it should serve a game play purpose, and not just be in to complicate things unnecessarily. I can see it useful for navigating hills, or ruble better. I can't see a reason to put in manual engine starts.

These Ideas would give the Driver more to do than just point the Tank in a particular direction and Go, Manual start, I don't know whether that would be a good option (but then again, the Simmer in Me says Yes:)), But I think a restart Engine Button would be good for say if the Driver over heated the Engine or the Tank stalled for being in the wrong gear on a gradient.
Would make it a bit more interesting for sure:D

As for manual start, I dont see what would be bad about it.
Yes it would not add a whole lot to the game but it will help make tanks feel more real.

I am sure TW will have training levels for tanks and singleplayer with them, so i dont think its gona be to hard for people to understand how to drive.

manual shifting? Anyone else remember mafia 1 and how much FUN it was to drive the cars with the manual shifting?

IMO the "relaxed" realism should let players choose automatics or standard.

Full realism is standard transmission. The majority of players who will be tanking a lot (MYSELF) wont have any trouble getting used to driving the tank( dont quote me on that, they could make it a *****). If anything it would just aide in tanks on full realism being "reserved" for players who know what they are doing in a tank.

And nothing would stop players from playing singleplayer to practice driving a tank...

Manual gearbox would also bring in the right way to drive a tank. Since tank engines were notorious to get damaged, if they were driven too long with too high RPM. Drivers had to keep RPM

Yep
Good idea !!

More realism !!

RO 2 need this.
