How about a weekly TWI "proving server?"

Yes, I know I am spending TWI's money here, but I think it has to come from them to work. I'd be happy to paypal money to help support it.

What I was thinking was a weekly poll and a mod to test "what if" scenarios. It would not be white-listed.

Here's how it would work.

1) TWI runs a poll of maybe 20 or so suggestions. One change per suggestion.
2) The top suggestion would be run for a week or two at the most.
3) Everyone posts their opinions and experiences on that server.
4) Profit!! Ok, maybe not.
5) New poll

The point is to test all of the things people suggest so they are possibly integrated into the game at some point or completely ruled out. I'm not talking major changes. Just a little tweak of the code to see how things would really work.

For example.

Lower zerker carrying capacity to 7 or some other really low number to really make them only melee.
Add another canister or two to firebug's capacity
Completely remove FP's rage timer
Kick up the max number of spanwed zeds to 80
Have melee run the same speed as everyone else
Remove all headshot damage from all zeds
Make scrakes unstunnable
Double the speed of crawlers
Take away all smoke from the launched grenades
Take away player's self healing capacity
Take the axe out
Take out all alt-attacks
Take away faster running with the knife
Level 6 players can't carry 9mm ammo
and so on...

Of course some of the suggestions would make for a completely suicidal game. Some of the suggestions would never make it into the game. But the point would be to try different things to see how they would work and how it affects gameplay. Maybe some suggestions sound completely off the wall but playing them would spark other ideas. It would be a way to actually try suggestions to see how they would work and provide real experience so people can say "That worked." or "We've tried that and it was way unbalanced."

Hmm, not too bad of an idea i think.

On top of that, they can also do this with community-made content, like new mutators, new weapons (Try out the M99 and weapons like that with PuG players would be nice for example :D) and stuff like that.
Would certainly be a great way for TWI to see if the community likes the stuff and then see if it should be added to retail or not...

EDIT: And i agreed with the others, your particular ideas are weird, but the general principle of the suggestion is nice

TF2 Beta reporting in. Now awaiting TWI use.

TF2 Beta has the same simular thing and it only changes every like, month or two.

It might not seem like alot to you to change a few values around but asking for it weekly is asking quite a bit of them.

I don't really like those particular ideas, but I'd still say that I'd like the TWI lads to crack open the Beta & Crew again.

Yesterday when I was playing KF I though : " What if TWI runs a bunch of dedicated servers?" ( Not beta style to test things , just normal servers)
( Yes , sorta like Valve runs L4D-L4D2 , doesn't means im comparing it or whatever you might think)

It'de be like, asking TWI to make a mutator for every week.

Why don't you guys make a mutator every week then, if it's that simple?

Overall it seems like a good idea but certainly too much work.

I believe they were examples, not actual suggestions...

This might be an idea for the Fall of Brittania team tbh. If they get enough modder support and commitment maybe the community could do it themselves. I'd be happy to take part if we all chip in to run the server...

Perhaps TWI would let us make use of the now useless KF beta which I believe I still have in my game list... I now wonder if the servers in there are actually still running... but I doubt it :)

Weekly may be a bit much. Maybe every two weeks or run until the change has enough feedback.

While running a weapon or different mut could work, I was thinking of simple code changes. Want to remove the axe? Just drop the damage to 0. Take out alt-attacks? Just point the alt-attack to the regular attack code. Maybe have the FP spawn raged and stay that way?

To see what they would do and spawn new ideas. What if all of the specimens' speed was doubled? How would that change the game? What if their speed was halved? What if the axe was removed? The board can discuss wht they think would happen but no one really knows. What you think is an "atrocious idea" could actually work out well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unintended_consequences As I mentioned earlier, some of those suggestions will produce an unplayable game. Maybe the entire team is wiped in wave one. Maybe not. Maybe one of those suggestions, or a suggestion by someone else, makes a better game or creates another suggestion.

They were actual suggestions. And why not? The point of the testing server is to try things that that sound off the wall or possible additions. After all, what does it hurt?

I like the diea, but maybe do as others have suggested and use it as a means to test mods and levels and other such things. I believe this would be a good way to get a unique experience every week due to the different mods and mutators changing each week or something. Would also make for a good way to test whether the mods are suitable for retail as Aze suggested.

I like it. One problem though. There are definitely more than 6 people posting on the KF forums so there would need to be multiple servers. Otherwise it would just be clogged an overfilled the whole time.
