If this game delivers to me the experience I thought RO2 was going, which we all know it didn't, I'm going to be one happy man.

Yowsa! What engine are they using? Looks like it's got great potential.

Probably not since it's going to be an MMO/FPS/RTS hybrid type of game.

I would love for them to atleast release the engine under the GPL license when they are done with it.

So many companies can form a cult following just by releasing their game engines to the public.

or at least allow others to license it.

Well, if it is moddable, you can mod the RTS (or FPS) aspects out of it. I'll keep watching this title anyways... though I think Carrier Command Gaea will be my next online FPS/RTS game.

Did you get to play the Alpha yet DiedTrying?

If so, what's it like? Or is there an NDA.

There is indeed an NDA.

It's pretty good, but I've yet to experience anything more than an 8 on 8 battle (a lot of people like to sign up for alpha keys but not actually play)

But even those small battles are fun.

One interesting aspect is how closely Reto actually listens to and works with the community. They've even gone so far as to invite community members to their headquarters for video shoots and advice.

Great to hear DT and thanks for the reply.
Pity more aren't playing the alpha but hopefully that'll change when the next batch of keys go out.

While browsing their forums, I noticed a lot of forumites from the WWIIONLINE community there. I'll be honest, that sort of turns me off from the game. Why? Because if they are giving feedback to how the game should be created, it will most likely turn into utter crap, much like WWIIONLINE is known for. How? We all know they love graphics from 1999, no built in voip, zero historical accuracy and realism.

While I loved WWIIONLINE for the ambiance I agree. It was so annoying seeing 231s all over the place everytime and the graphics that were able to be way better.

Interestingly, the WW2OL members on the H&G forums all realize that WW2Online is crap, which is why they are on H&G forums looking for a new game.

They have zero intention of turning H&G into the game they ran away from.

edit: I see you are actually one of those members. Read back a few pages, on the WW2OL thread, you'll see they want change.

I hope you are right. But how come they weren't that passionate about making WWIIONLINE into a better and more historically accurate game on their forums the past 10 years?

WW2Online devs shut out the community.

From what I understand a few of the devs knew what was best for the game and started banning long time posters (sound familiar?) and arguing against any suggestions.

There is a reason why that game has one foot in the grave.

This DOES sound familiar.

Not for me. Care to explain?

I also saw that WWIIOL doesn't have any forums except the support one.

You have to subscribe to the game to have access to the WW2Online forums.

We had a good test day last night. Had a full server and it was mayhem, but in a good way.

And just to clear the air. The game isn't meant to be a realistic sim. They are approaching it as a "balanced" game. I'd prefer to have that in a MMOFPS, rather than the tediousness of WW2Online (ever do a tank convoy? zzzzz)

I extracted this portion from an email that I got from one of the devs. And it doesn't look good for the game at this moment.

Our goal is not to create a simulation game. We wish to create a somewhat arcadey shooter with realistic elements such as a realistic ballistics system, a fairly realistic vehicle handling system, etc. We won't go all out CoD, and we won't go all out WWII Online. I guess that we're somewhere in between. But what we do have is the Strategic Resource Management game on top of the shooter.

It's always had one foot in the grave. The only reason people played that game is because you had no other choice, except OFP/Arma2, which that community hates for some reason. Now that the PC gaming market has really opened up, there is many more choices at present. So Cornered Rats either sink or swim at this point.
