Anyone else watching this?

I've watched the first two episodes now. After the first episode I started reading the book. They appear to have done a very faithful job of adaptation. (Much closer, anyway, than True Blood was.) There's only been a couple of bits that weren't in the book, and probably 99% of the dialogue is straight out of the book. There's a few scenes that have been juggled around, to make the show flow a little better, but on the whole it seems quite good so far.

Thoughts?

I enjoyed the first episode, the beginning was very well done too - I actually felt quite tense watching the bit in the snow.

Also it's nice to see something where Sean Bean doesn't die.

That first bit was one of the few parts that they mixed around, and I still haven't figured out why. In the book, the old guy was the one that ran, not the young kid.

As for Sean Bean not dying ... haven't watched much Sharpe, then? :D

It's funny, but in a way I'm glad that I saw the first episode before reading the books. Now I've got those actors faces and voices in my head when I'm reading.

Well Sharpe, and Ronin are the only 2 good things I can recall that he hasn't died in and he was barely in Ronin...I do have the lovely Sharpe Box set though.

I'm obviously blissfully unaware what happens to his character in this...:D

So I've never read these books or heard of them for that matter... should I read them first or just go ahead and watch the show? I'm not a huuuuuuuge fantasy fan... never read anything that topped the hobbit tbh, but it looks like it's all the rage on amazon.

That said I love books like the stuff Bernard Cornwell puts out, his Arthur series was excellent, as are all the Viking/Saxon Tales books (he also wrote the Sharpe books which are cool but I'm less fond of simply because it's 3rd person and the setting isn't as interesting to me). So if this feels more like historical fiction and less like WoW I'd like it is I guess what I'm saying :p.

Go get the books, they don't read like the typical fantasy novels, theyre full of politics, intrigues and plot twists.

Also, I do think that due to all the characters, plots, subplots and sideplots, the show could be confusing for people unfamiliar with the books.

I do have the first book, got it three years ago, but could not finish it, so many characters and unrelated chapters right from the beginning made it feel too disjointed tor me, making it extremely hard to read as I kept constantly losing concentration.

There are more natural ways to present a complex story with many characters, slowly developing and expanding while you follow a clear path, until one is familiar with its world. I must get into it before the complexity is thrown at my face, else I'd have trouble concentrating, remembering characters, or even caring about what happens to them.

I haven't seen the show yet.

I heard there are lots of tits. lol.

As I understand it is the same in the books, so you can't really blame HBO.

I've seen the first to episodes and was pleasantly surprised. I usually think fantasy tv series always turn out to be crap, but if this continues like the last episodes it could turn into one of my favorite tv-series.

Hmmm well watched the first episode... it was alright I guess. I couldn't shake the feeling that I was watching the SyFy channel though...

"Rome" was a much greater series when it comes to this kind of thing (though that was pure history more or less, with fictional aspects thrown in). Mark Antony ftw!

YouTube - Rome - Mark Antony Owns Everyone: Part 1

Now THAT show had incredible writing+acting.

i still haven't bothered watching sopranos aside from death montages on youtube.

hbo: sex and violence to appeal to the masses, and so-so dialog to appeal to the pretentious "selective viewer"
