As a kid, I gobbled up everything and anything related to helicopters in Vietnam, Hueys, Chinooks, Jolly Green Giants, and of course Cobra Gunships. Having made a couple maps for RO2, I am well aware of the issues that would arise with adding flyable vehicles to RS2, but thought I would drop this thread anyhow just to get others thoughts on Helicopter use in the Vietnam War. Even if it doesn't make it into the game, we can still talk choppers here!

I love flying da choppahs, but I can't see adding them in RS sized maps or even 4x the size. Unless they have a cartoon flying model, they need lots of space to get up to speed, decelerate, and turn at speed. And if the bad guys have rpg's, flying slow will get you killed.

Plus, if you add in RSoD and other limitations, where are you going to be able to fly? Unless the spawn points and caps are scaled for vehicles and aircraft, they will be like now, only 15- 20 seconds of running apart. So, once they lift off, aircraft would immediately be within striking distance of the initial enemy spawn and every spawn and cap behind it. If you make the maps big enough for aircraft and helos to be used as transport with caps a couple of Km apart, people will ***** they have to run too far.

I'm thinking we'll see called airstrikes via phantoms & gunships, maybe with player controlled door gunners on the helos. I'd expect a "napalm in the morning" wave of hueys on rails like we have landing craft now for the initial spawn on some maps too.

I would be on board for US based "drops" as used for resupply etc. basically be able to spawn a chopper that flys to the designated area and drops off ammo etc. This however would be balanced by the vietcong being able to shoot it down and the VC to be able to booby trap the heck out of everything. another idea would be a chopper gunship run that players could call in
