Real grenades in WW2 (especially on the eastern front) were not HE.

Could someone make grenades actually shoot shrapnel out every where?

You could track each shrapnel like a bullet, and have them spread out randomly, so you have a slight chance of survival.

You could maybe make them bounce around? like, if I threw a grenade into a concrete bunker, wouldn't the shrapnel bounce off the walls and ceiling?

It would add to realism and game play because it would look pretty.

Have a trail of smoke following the shrapnel as they bounce and spread around. and have them hit the walls and make little puffs of smoke.

I think this would be so awesome.

Also could you make the grenade physics a bit cooler looking? as in, they bounce in the appropriate areas? like, sand they would just stick there, and maybe slide a bit, but for indoor areas maybe they could slide and bounce a little?

maybe thats just Hollywood talking, but I recently saw a video of a cop frantically throwing a grenade away , and in skipped down the concrete stairs, down to the ground where in bounce just a little into the air and exploded. covering the walls around it with smoke as the shrapnel pounded against the walls. (the video was real)

I want that kinda effect.

Ooo! could you make the same effect for exploding tanks? like, instead of the tank shell bouncing off from frontal shots have the round explode into pieces, and possibly hurt the crew or infantry around the tank. :D

"real" shrapnels require a lot of spawn calls in the code/script which are among the most expensive functions. The benefit of such an approach over the one implemented is not significant imo.

The original F1 grenade in the mod actually had shrapnel that fired out. It was great to see one go off in a confined street or alley, or a room, because you'd see the impact of the shrapnel on the walls etc. This was up to ranges of 30m (as is reported it is effective at)

But sadly there was FAR TOO MUCH COMPLAINING that it was too effective, or wrong and it ended up getting changed.

Also, shrapnel if not buried in a person usually became lodged somewhere or destroyed itself via impact with a surface.

The German Model 24 Stielhandgranate relied mostly on concussive force, and had little shrapnel to speak of. The modeled shrapnel of the F1's back in the mod days was cool though.

The German grenades also had a frag sleave that could go over a standard German grenade and very late in the war German grenades were made from concrete to save raw materials I'd think concrete grenades have some fragmentation to to them.

All grenades fragment, even the potato masher, when you have an explosion inside a sealed metal cylinder you are going to get fragments, just not as many or in as consistant a pattern as the Pineapple design offers.

So for absolute realism, they should spew fragments, but the F1 should obviously spew out alot more than the masher.

But would it be a good thing for the game? perhabs not.. there's an obvious fear of them becoming too powerfull and grenade spam becoming a serious problem, but there's also the problem of server overhead, every time an F1 goes off the server would have to spawn, and calulate a truckload of projectiles, and considdering that servers allready seem stressed by RO, that could be a deal breaker.

Lots of smoke puffing out and the guy next to it was wounded (not sure how bad ?) and knocked unconsciousness. Now that effect should also be in RO.

Does anyone know what was the most earlier form of shrapnel exploding devices that came before and just after WW1 ?

Err? thats way older than WWI, we can probably trace it all the way back to ancient China, but just to play it safe, lets just point to the first time someone decided to put Gunpowder in cannon balls.

The "Pineapple" design of the shell is strictly to offer something to grip on to with your hand. Most of the fragmentation comes from additional projectiles like coils of stringed ball-bearings inside the case's inner walls.

It would be cool if some day there would be a game with realistic wounding and shrapnels.

Back in the army we had a demostration of the amount and size of shrapnels different explosives produce; there was at least a claymore, a pipe bomb (sort of oversized handgrenade used for nasty traps) and a WW2 era 76mm arty shell. They were surrounded by big cartboard plates (1x1m or so) at different ranges. After those were detonated the closest plates were FULL of big and small holes. There are ofcourse fewer bigger chunks that are deadlier and fly further but at close range, say 10-20 meters, there's also a HUGE amount of small debris that will easily pepper your skin and cause a horrible amount of small nasty wounds if you don't have proper shrapnel vest and helmet (like the case was in WW2).

Alrighty then, Ditch the grenade idea.

How about the tank shell? instead of bouncing off when at point-blank range and showing flat armor, have it explode into pieces?

or did they not do this cause it would confuse people, not knowing if they're round penetrated or exploded?

maybe for the grenade idea, just have puffs of smoke, for a cooler effect.

If you watch the video, the shrapnel hits the surrounding objects. creating puffs of smoke.

There's nothing wrong with the grenade idea, as we said it used to be in the game. I personally never had a problem with it. But with a larger servers with more players, and a lot of grenade spam (which was a problem in the mod) it just doesn't remain feasible.
Taking it much further to make it look cool really is not worth the effort in older tech like Unreal2.

As for tank shells, there are a few things that can happen. I've had plenty of non-critical hits that had no effect, and there was no ricochet either.
