One band that I like a lot currently is Circa Survive. I think they have a really unique sound.

I listen to a lot of music like that. I'm more of an underground guy... Death Cab is one of the only well-known bands I listen to.

If your like me and you have a broad range of rock music you like... Specifically Acoustic rock... Check this guy out: Joe Wilson

He runs his own little 1 person acoustic band Feeling Left Out

If you don't like the first song or so listen to a few more. None of his songs sound the same... He's really talented.

I listen to a lot of different things - RATM and Deathcab amongst them. Here's some more for the menu...

National Acts:

Mike Doughty / Soul Coughing
S.C. was around for a while, blending acoustic upright bass, drums, guitar, crazy-ass samples, and the unmistakable poetry/spoken-word/semi-singing of M. Doughty. Though the band broke up, Doughty is still releasing his solo material. Very fresh lyrics and delivery - he's definitely got a unique style.

Michael Franti and Spearhead:

A politically-and-socially conscious hip hop artist that's been around since the early 90's, what makes his music special is that it transcends all of the bling-bling crap-rap out there. He's got some intelligent things to say and says them very eloquently - whether it's a soft acoustic piece or a hardcore attack "on the system". If you guys like Rage Against the Machine, you'll definitely dig this band for their message.

Reborn Bands: (Bands I like that broke up but came back in a new form...)

The Dreaming

My favorite band of all time was Stabbing Westward, which broke up in 2002. Their singer - Christopher Hall - has formed a new band called The Dreaming and they're starting to make their way in the L.A. scene. Similar type of music to S.W. - dark, heavy, emotional.

Shocknina
I really liked this band called KidneyThieves, as it combined alternately haunting and biting female vocals with amazing electronics, drumming, and guitars. The singer left, but they have reformed as Shocknina, with a hot new singer and a new style that's a bit more accessible and less cerebral. While KT was more instrospective, SN puts the sex out there a little more.

Local Music:

This is a VERY unique band. They blend latin drums and percussion, guitar, bass, samples, keyboards, and more to create a truly "Miami" sound. It's some of my favorite music to chill out to, because it has such a great, fresh groove to it.

Super talented guy, this dude plays every instrument on his albums and is a fearsome drummer. It's straight-up rock music, with good lyrics and harmonies.

http://www.TheSquareEgg.com :
Very intelligent blend of hip-hop and R&B. It's actually the antithesis of the gangsta / thug crap out there. They recently relocated up to NYC and are making a good name for themselves up there.

Well, I wouldn't call DCFC "well-known." For indie fans, yes. For music in general, though, it's pretty under-the-radar.

In the USA that's pretty much the same for all modern rock. Except for the most terrible bands... Those are the ones who often make it big (By terrible I mean horrid in concert). There are a few who are pretty good though. But yeah, most of the music listeners in US seem to be into c"rap" if you know what I mean. From what I hear the music ear is changing so who knows... Maybe we have grown out of that stage (Hopefully).

The thing with new music is that most (not all, I know) of it is based on older, better music.

Genres start with fresh, radical, interesting music and inevitably turn stale and commercial. Look at punk. Or hip-hop.

Nearly everything in this world is based on something...

And obviously that "better music" is personal opinion... Because I think that "older" music sucks... But it's just my opinion.

Well obviously is just opinion. And yes, all forms of art are based on something.

But, as usual...

I dunno. I loved the Smiths and like Morrisey fine, but I like Johnny Marr better. At least, I value my The The albums more than my solo Morrisey albums.

I'll put in a plug here for Montreal's Arcade Fire.

And a question: I've heard quite a bit recently about Babyshambles. Anyone heard them yet? Any recommendations?

As much of a cock as Pete Doherty is, I got the album because it is actually really good.

Probably Mick Jones' influence. :)
