After reading quite a few medieval books and seeing a few movies, I've started to get into the genre and am looking for some good games.
Preferrably, I'd like a game that takes place before gunpowder, and is a strategy game. any reccomendations?

thanks:IS2:

Medieval Total War II & Medieval Kingdoms (Expansion)

Easily one of the best Stragety games of all time and a Medieveal setting, add to it the expansion and various MODs and you won't be dissapointed. However I imagine you already have this so onwards for more choices.

Lionheart: Kings' Crusade

Plays much like Total War lite, although the setting is interesting. Not a bad game, just not as good as a Total War game (which is understandable)

Stronghold 1/2

I haven't played Stronghold 2 however Stronghold 1 was great fun, they play more like traditional RTS games with building etc.

Medieval or Medieval 2. They are turn based grand strategy games where you control cities and units on a world map and when units battle enemy units this is done in a real-time tactical mode so you get the best of both worlds.:)
The games do have flaws, most notable in the enemy AI, but unless you read about them extensively you can easily lose 20+ hours the games before you start noticing and depending on how much you like the games 20+ more before you really start to care. So in my opinion they are totally worth getting. Get Medieval 2 if your PC can run it and Medieval 1 if it can't.

And if you can live with a fictional universe (but no magic or demons and whatnot) I think you would enjoy Mount and Blade. It's not a strategy game but an action role-playing game, I guess, but it's a little hard to describe how exactly it works. There is a free demo though so you can just take a look yourself. I recommend it.

I'm sure Stronghold 1 and its expansions would appeal to you a great deal as well. You basically manage castles and attack or defend them. Just stay away from Stronghold 2.

Knights of Honor may be worth a look too. It feels pretty authentic. Personally, I found it too complicated to be really enjoyable for me, but your mileage may vary. It's well done and unique and has an authentic atmosphere. Maybe tehre is a demo you can try.

stronghold looks pretty good, i wiki'd it and found out a 3rd one is coming out next spring, but my gaming money for then is reserved for hoes so i might get this. i tried medieval total war before and while I liked it at the same time I didn't. kind of hard to explain

mount and blade looks pretty cool. is warband a sequel or what? can i just buy that or would you reccomend starting with the original?

Warband is referred to as a standalone expansion. However, it really is just the original game improved in every way...and it has multiplayer unlike the first. Definitely get Warband and ignore the first one.

Warband is great. It has some strategy but it's mostly very thin and based on the action. If you want to be in the thick of it Warband is your choice.

I haven't played Dark Messiah, but I agree M&B still has a faint edge of indie development on it, from the graphics to how it handles.

That said, it barely detracts from the game for me. Mechanically the game may not perform the prettiest, but I think it's one of the best simulations in the whole genre. There is little that compares to running down a dude on horseback, and cutting him down with a two-handed weapon at a full gallop, or going Braveheart and chopping someone's horse out from under them.

Stronghold (the first one) for sure if you want a great strategy game.

Total war is ok as well but the ai and multiplayer are both too lacking.

Mount and blade warband is amazing.

My son had Dark Messiah and I actually liked it enough to complete it. Good swordplay, some fantasy elements of course, but worth it especially if you can get it cheap.

I'm a bit suspicious about Stronghold 3. Stronghold 1 was fantastic (I played countless hours), but Stronghold 2 was done very very poorly. I'm gonna have to see some proof that they're actually going to make a good game this time around.

ive been playing warband a lot lately myself and enjoying it quite a lot. Playing the stock version right now but will get mods after some time. (just got elected marshal for the first time) There are plenty of mods apparently as well for it.

You already can start your own faction in Mount and Blade, without mods. Then you can assign fiefs to your companions and stuff.
Spoiler!

Older, but I thought they were good when I played them

- Lords of the Realm (series, although I haven't played 3, nor Magic)
- Castles (series, what Stronghold was trying to be.. but fell short imo..)

Both were excellent Midevil stat. games, sans Gunpowder, but again, they are older.. definitely don't support widescreen, or rolled up IS-2s, and might not even run on 64-bit machines or newer NT kernels.

What was that one game? King Arthur, or something?

http://forums.tripwireinteractive.com/showthread.php?t=40959&highlight=king+arthur

In a nutshell, it's a medieval game....

But it's much closer a Sword and Sorcery RPG meets Total War kind of game. It's got a medieval flavor...but if someone is looking for something more authentic, this probably isn't the game for them. There's also no first person action in it.

Still, it's a great game and good for anyone that like Arthurian Tales. It's just on a completely different wave length than, say, Mount and Blade.

Actually this might be right up the OP's alley. It's TBS strategy on the game map, and RT Strategy during the battles.
