I bought Ghost Recon 1 on steam when it was really cheap a couple of days ago and when I went to install it today I noticed the news item that said Ubisoft announced "Ghost Recon Online", which sounds horrible to begin with, but also it's supposed to be a free-to-play MMO with premium items - developed by Ubisoft Singapore...

Apparently it's exactly as horrible as this makes it sound, lol. Here's a trailer:

Love the shield charge special attack with speed-blurs...:p
What are they thinking?
And why is this crap called "Ghost Recon"? If it's just about brand recognition, why not call it "Madden 2012"?:(

The basic idea of a Ghost Recon Online sounds interesting, but why in gods name make it casual crap like that when it's 1) pc exclusive 2) the main fanbase likes the series for its tactical approach to combat?

Doesn't sound interesting to me at all. Online coop, online competitive play, whatever. But a MMO? I can't picture that at all, tbh.

What are you going to do in a Ghost Recon MMO that you can't do in a regular singleplayer/coop/multiplayer game?
"Hey, let's do the Neo-Red-Army-Faction dungeon with the tank-boss again, I want to find my unique AK74-SU with the +5 damage enhancement."

What's the world that MMO is going to take place in going to look like?
I can sort of envision an MMO version of ww2, where everyone is a soldier and there is war everywhere, but Ghost Recon? You're supposed to be a team that doesn't exist, executing missions that never take place in wars that haven't begun! Is every player going to be a secret agent? If yes, no thanks, I prefer a regular coop mode. If not, no thanks, I don't want to have to play a Russian ultra-nationalist baddie with horrible aim who has to guard some munitions depot with his ultra-nationalist buddies...

Ghost Recon Online, beginning at the name, is a horrible concept and that they helplessly fell back to making it a cheap free-to-play shooter that has nothing to do with Ghost Recon whatsoever proves that they had no clue what to do with the idea either.
How could they, lol? It was some executive's brain-fart that a board of greedy investors found just dandy and now some poor development studio is stuck with this crap. I just find it hilarious that ideas this vague and bad can get as far as a gameplay trailer (and probably farther)...:)

I don't know anything Ubisoft Singapore did before and perhaps I'm giving them too much credit, but them making this as bad as they did, with the disgustingly terrible writing in the trailer seems to me like a silent cry. A tiny bit of sad protest, hidden in a horrible but professional-enough-not-to-cost-anyone-their-job piece of game. I could be wrong, of course, but to me it feels just a bit too text-book bad to be genuinely bad.

The suffix Online doesn't just mean it's a multiplayer focused game. The games aren't called Counterstrike Online, Battlefield 2 Online, Halo Online, Call of Duty Online or Red Orchestra Online. Online in the name implies certain other things and this Ghost Recon Online debacle seems to have them all. Extreme accessibility, silly special abilities, stuff to unlock, etc.
A notable exception could be WW2 Online, but that's a full-fledged MMO which wouldn't work for a proper Ghost Recon game.

If you say Ghost Recon Online would be a good idea it's impossible for a normal-thinking person (such as myself, lol) to infer from that you just meant a regular ole game with a heavy emphasis on multiplayer.
So, sorry I misread your earlier post, but it really wasn't my fault, lol.

As for a multiplayer-only Ghost Recon being a good idea... I'm afraid I can't even agree with that. Ghost Recon without coop wouldn't be Ghost Recon for me. So multiplayer-only wouldn't be something I'd be interested in and I think another franchise would be better suited for that.
You're supposed to be a top-secret elite team up against impossible odds in missions against either untrained terrorists or regular soldiers, who only present impossible odds because of their advantage in numbers, mechanization, your need for utmost secrecy and certain other factors (hostages, nukes and whatnot).
So VS multiplayer would feel out of place to me. Unless they can make those six elite ghosts vs. 50+ gun tooting terrorists with a clancy-esque plan scenarios work in multiplayer without making the terrorist side feel like they've been hit with the nerf stick, which I highly doubt...
It's good to have multiplayer in the game, of course, because it's fun (even Ghost Recon 2: Summit Strike was quite fun in MP), but not as the sole focus, imo.
If there is ever going to be a sole focus in any Ghost Recon game it should be on coop. Just my opinion, of course.

They're also making a new Rainbow 6 game. Seems more lame than Vegas. :p

gutted - i thought you were going to say ubi had released a free mp version of GR you could dload (similar to the release of quake 3 mp a while back) with mp1 + mp2 and returning to an integrated server browser.
And then you were going to say theres loads of ppl, old and new alike, playing it right now.

But you didn't - don't know why i thought that wishful thinking I guess.
