i'm also a bit surprised there's not yet been any news regarding KF from the GDC. considering they were holding drawings for giving away KF t-shirts and hats, as well as running what appears to be a KF video on the screen in the background, i would expect there was SOMETHING mentioned about KF. maybe after all the "shock" of the HOS news has started to wear off, some KF news will also begin to surface.

Holy crap ... if it's evil possible my already huge excitement level just doubled after this preview. I would die if we got some footage from GDC! Seriously all this sounds really awesome.

There's only one minor quip I have about the screenshots here and in other updates. I'm starting to see a Brothers in Arms-esque method of placing objects in the level where it looks like clutter is being placed for the sole functional use of providing cover for the new cover system. The issue with this is that it looks really artificial.

This screenshot shows it best ... it's mainly the spots with perfecly angled cover (wood planks, barrels, etc):

Good point. Though then again, many of ROOST's maps have this issue also. Random tables and boards strewn around to create cover.

Hopefully though the new penetration system works well and most of that wooden cover isn't all that useful. Wood doesn't do a great job of stopping rifle rounds. At the very least those crates would get shredded by battle-rifle cartidges. The piles of boards wouldn't be all that much safer.

Notably, the weapon used in that trial was an M-16 which uses a 5.56x45mm, an assault rifle cartridge, significantly less powerful than the minimum WWII battle rifle cartridge of 7.62x54mm.

You could expect a reasonable amount of steel penetration with most of the battle rifle cartridges.

Lol which, if portrayed realistically, this would mean the neatly placed "cover" would be brutal for noobs. Just think: "Oh gees I'm under fire ... hey look! There's some cover I can use!" RATATAT "WTFZOMGKJDkjdfkajskdjfasdfkjdjj!!!!"

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe reading from somewhere that 7.62 rifle cartridge (not sure were they referring to WW2 bullet or NATO standard) was capable of penetrating roughly of 1cm of steel at close range.

Easily. If we're talking about regular steel and not face-hardened armor plate, I'm fairly certain a WWII era rifle cartridge can regularly penetrate about a 1/2" (1.27cm) of steel at 100+ meters.

Your questions shall be answered:
http://www.wwiivehicles.com/germany/guns/mg.asp

8mm Mauser penetrates....interestingly, 8mm of RHA at 30 degrees from vertical at 100 meters. With an armor piercing round, 8mm Mauser penetrates 13mm at 30 degrees. At short range with standard steel core ammunition at a vertically oriented plate, I think you could reasonably expect (slightly) greater than 1cm penetration with either 8mm Mauser or 7.92x54r. Using trig, that's nearly 12.7mm distance penetrated.

This website does not host penetration values for Russian light machine gun calibers...

However:
http://www.wwiivehicles.com/ussr/guns.asp

It does host their HMG caliber penetration. 12.7, or roughly .50 caliber, penetrates 10 mm (1 cm) at 100 yards (no angle given).

And Call of Duty has significant penetration, along with cars that can explode when you shoot them. Believe me, they caused me some degree of frustration at first.

But if Call of Duty 4 can do it and manage, I'm sure RO can.

It's more important, in my view, to be able to shoot somebody hiding behind some easily pierced cover than it is for me to hide behind a conveniently placed twig or defeat a battle rifle cartridge with a window frame.

Oh I'm all for cover that can be shot through ... I like to watch the noobs squirm.

Even in the current ROOST, you can turn off bullet collision for static meshes such as overturned tables or doors that you deem penetrable by small arms if the mapper so wishes it.

Well, then, I have to ask why the hell nobody does this?

Particularly the snipe server. Nothing annoys me quite as much as the snipe metagame in Ost. It's all about finding the SMALLEST possible gap in a given object that you can still see through, and somehow, despite your rifle clipping all the way through, you can shoot at anything you can see.

Because then it just passes the object giving no visual cues whatsoever. I'd rather have the bullet colliding with a table than the bullet magically passing through it.

i wonder if the penetration will be just going straight through if its possible or if the trajectory will actually be affected like irl.

Don't you think the poor servers have enough to calculate?

Call of Duty 4 has bullet penetration and runs on P2P on consoles :)

That means your server is an Xbox 360, which is not only hosting the entire server, it is also running the game in real time.

The difference is that in CoD 4 + CoD 6 the guns are peashooters, especially against targets behind "cover".

Take cover in CoD and you will be able to take 5-8 bullets (depends on perks and weapons of course), take cover in HoS and you will be able to take 1-2.

well, if you want to add penetration you might as well do it realistically and i wonder if the servers really have that much more to calculate compared to roost.
