Recently reading about Infinity's decision with respect to dedicated servers and MW2, it has led me to numerous threads, on all kinds of different forums, about the state of pc gaming.

Now I've read where lots of people play on both console and pc for different reasons but one thing in common is the love of the keyboard/mouse over the controller. I have to agree.

When I got my first pc I still played games on the console, and then I bought HalfLife2, (hello steam) Using a keyboard mouse was a little tricky at first but I came to love it and prefer it. Not to mention the whole new world of gaming that opened up to me.

So I got to thinking,(yikes):) I wonder if I could play on console with a keyboard/mouse. After searching I found that you can get adapters or converters to plug in the xbox for your keyboard/mouse.

So with all the love and discussion on how it is superior to the game pad controller, I agree, why is it not more common place? Do people use these?
I just never hear about it and thought it may make a good discussion seeing as nowadays, more and more companies seem to favor the console and are moving away from pc gaming. At least in the mainstream.

However, that been said, the natal motion camera could change how we look at and play games altogether.

please discuss

I'm sure you can't use your xbox with a keyboard + Mouse, as it simply doesn't erm, understand what your pressing.
I guess you could emulate the xbox controller, like if you press UP arrow, it would be just like pressing the stick up.
Only thing I've seen with a keyboard + mouse is UT3 on the PS3.

I don't know many people that use it, since It might not even be possible, and most games don't allow keyboard / Mouse unless you can trick it somehow, having the keyboard 'emulate' the controller buttons.

Besides, most people AFAIK don't play their consoles at their desks, and resting your keyboard on your lap and trying to find somewhere to put your mouse doesn't work either :p

tbh i dont mind that much if consoles slightly take over.

As long as a few things stay.
Accurate control (like mouse and keyboard, maybe a superduper accurate & fast wiimote could be made)
Dedicated servers that one can control
Modding & custom content criation.

I bought an adapter for Keyboard/Mouse to play Halo 2 when it first came out on the Xbox. I tried using the pad for a few weeks but it was hard work. I just couldn't get used to the controls. I'm left handed as well and even though there's supposed to be reverse default settings for the game I just couldn't get comfortable with it.

I've stuck to PC gaming since and keyboard and mouse are by far my controls of choice for FPS although I still use a pad for driving games like TrackMania. I set the left side Ctrl as Jump, Left Shift as Crouch and can generally use other settings as standard.

I don't think mouse and keyboard work as well on consoles as the ones selling try to make it sound. The games just aren't made for that. I suggest that if you want to play on a console you just clench your teeth and get used to playing with a controller. Maybe buy a first person shooter with a singleplayer campaign you'd like to play (seems like you can't really go wrong with a Halo game, for example and as a bonus they are pretty much the standard for fps games on the xbox and many other games imitate its controls. If you don't like Halo you might like Brothers in Arms) and finish it on Normal, then on Hard and by the time you finish it you should be able to play with a controller well enough.

Not as well as with mouse and keyboard (you'll never play that well with a controller! Ever! And there will always be moments where you think, "I coulda nailed that with a mouse"!), but well enough so it isn't awkward anymore and it comes naturally and you don't have to think about your finger movements anymore. As others are in the same boat as you are it shouldn't be much of a problem in terms of multiplayer.

only thing i really like about fps on consoles is the use of the left thumbstick to actually move the character about the place, it feels much better than wasd. you dont have to press the walk key to walk etc

instead you push the thumbstick forward. . . .

=/= w/forward . . ..

Though you can control the pace you can run/walk easily. Comes handy mostly. Also, I like the shoulder buttons on the controllers especially for shooters. It's kinda like "pulling the trigger" rather than pushing the mouse button.

Aiming with the right thumb is a pain in the *** though.

Solve that issue and I'm on the console bandwagon completely. After having a console, sitting in front of my PC desk is a no match for my comfy sofa :)

Comfort, cusomisation, weight, dpi . . . its all adds up to a more pleasant gaming experience. For example I have different DPI settings for RO, COD and Command and conquers. The mouse detects which game is running and changes accordingly.

I can also change the colour of the LEDs on my mouse  they are a nice light purple at the moment.

The KB, well, the LCD is super awesome, I like it in vent mode because I can see who is talking, joins, leaves etc and when I play some games alone it has Itunes on it. Also a handy clock. Backlight is also awesome. And if you didnt know, the Red Orch app is good too. You can see whats capping, your K/D, points etc . . .

Nope you are wrong... Your mouse don't detect anything. Its the software and without it your mouse is just plain crap. And I can change the dpi of the mouse, even that its not the "gaming mouse" (Its still mayby a little slower, but i can play any game with the same 'ol dpi :p)

Your obviously not clued up then. My mouse stores the software, so its the mouse doing the controlling.

Adjustible dpi mid game at the flick of the side buttons is really great, i especially like it in whilst doing 3d modelling.

The only argument you have is cost. And, well, im not a student so spending 40 quid on a mouse is fine. You get what you pay for.

Somebody sent me a Logitech G5 about 2 years ago... to this day I have no idea who but it has served me very well indeed. It has adjustable weights - you can add a number of 4.5g slugs to affect the weight. I chose to max mine out so the mouse is actually pretty heavy (it's the only exercise I get, y'see ;))

I do not use the extra buttons - except possibly the thumb button for use on mumble when in-game but the adjustable dpi is very useful indeed when modelling and sniping in RO :)

*Edit* I think my name and address somehow got mixed up in the RO mapping contest - even though I did not enter - as the mouse arrived about the time that the winners were announced.
