Now correct me if im wrong, please do because it would mean i need glasses, but no one in this thread has bashed on ROHOS or trolled.

Thats because mister flashy sigs (OP) troll threads have been removed. Hard to tell if this is yet just another.

Either way, its produced some good content. That ArmA mod looks good, and I might give that a go. Our group still plays HOS though.

Combat mission battle for normandy. Not free but new.
It has the same thing going on as this forum does, many people compare it
to the older combat mission games that were WEGO (combination of turn and real time).
Of course the game is very popular, but lost a lot of its older fan base just like RO2.

It is very realistic like RO2 and has a lot of people debating is laurels. However it is now mature
and has settled into a good fan base. It is however very niche. You simply will not get main stream gamers
that want to hard core simulate a company sized engagement in real time.

Problem with CMBN is that the devs are deaf to constructive criticism and they have *very* vocal fanboy group that will shout down anyone saying the game needs serious work. Well, actually game itself is fine but the UI is horrible. It makes gameplay feel more like work than fun. You do not have even basic tools like listing of units under your command. It's just as easy just to hunt down Lt Winters. And the waypoint system, they cannot be moved and the system is very unforgiving with precision clicks required or you're dumped back to beginning.

My favourite counter is that anyone criticizing the UI (which is worse than CMBB) should play C64 strategy games, that's bad UI. They also introduced as a default a total abortion of hotkey system which apparently mimics some US CnC device that overloads every button (of 9-key keypad) with multiple functions depending on context.

Yech. It's a good game struggling to get out of that horrible interface. I really hope they stop listening to the lifers who are few but fanatic and revamp it for the next release.

I hear you regarding the devs and agree to a certain extent. They do seem to have very selective hearing regarding any complaints about the game and there still are a lot of things that need attention. Even so, for me it is the best tactical wargame I've ever played and still holds my attention now many months after release.

I don't regard my self as a Fanbois by any stretch of the imagination but I've spent quite a lot of time with CMBN and don't have many problems with the user interface. This is the first game in the series I've played though and many of the complaints regarding the UI seem to come from people who have played the earlier games in the series and are having trouble adapting to the newer UI. Whilst there are some aspects of the UI that I feel could be improved I certainly don't find it the 'show stopper' that you have described. It certainly doesn't mar any enjoyment that I get from the game now that I've got to grips with it. Admittedly, getting to grips with it did take some time though and it can be a bit counter intuitive at times. Familiarity is the only answer I think and I get on with it pretty well now.

I hope the devs will still concentrate on improving the game as well as churning out the many add-ons that they have planned.

i like ww2 a lot too, not that many recent ones though.

there are a few upcoming games; Iron Front and Heroes & Generals.

I dont understand why people say WW2 is overplayed, i mean for the past 3 years all we've gotten is Modern Warfare...

Is forgotten hope one of those games that gives you tonnes of units while being very basic like BF2 was?
Don't get me wrong I loved BF2 realism mod (cannot remember name). But RO2 offers so much when it comes to weapons and tanks being faithfully reproduced in a "working" not just "replica" fashion that it would be hard to go back.

Some of my favourite games ever have been on FH2. It gets rid of most, if not all of the things that are a pain about BF2, eg diving, weapon hit randomness etc. Alongside Project Reality, it's one of the best mods out there.

The maps are stunning, big and very realistic in layout. For me, there's no better WW2 multiplayer game. RO1 was good, but I just have more fun on FH2.

^^ This.

I just picked this up and installed it last weekend. Don't get me wrong, I like RO2. But the fact is that in my clan of about 30 guys, I am struggling to get 3-4 that want to play it with me. Most of us are waiting until the mods release so we can play the game the way WE want it to play. I rent a server and will continue to do so every month.

As for FH2, I actually read about it here on these forums somewhere so I checked it out. And I'll be honest, this game is the real deal. It does feel different than RO2 which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But as the post above says, the maps are huge, the play is slowed down, there's tons of vehicles of ALL sorts, the balance is just right, and bolts matter. Which I like.

So, while we're waiting, several of us in my group are playing it.

Totally agree. This is an epic wargame that's had me gripped since it came out. Loads of mods from the community to make it look better also. There is a Commonwealth add-on to be available soon.

My only criticism is that it's a bit pricey but well worth it IMO.

Another +1 on CMBN.

I had many issues with the new engine at first, but BFC have made many improvements and now there are only a few outstanding issues. The lack of tcp-ip wego being the main one (though if you can find an opponent willing to sit down and play a whole match through you could just use dropbox or something similar and have something nearly as good)

Anyone who likes serious WW2 games should enjoy it tremendously. There's basically nothing else like it out there. Pretty much the ultimate wargame for me.

About the UI, it was an enormous turnoff to me too (this was back when CMSF first came out---I shelved that game after a few hours dealing with the UI and the -at the time- horrid pathfinding), but with custom hotkeys I entirely skip the need to use the various tabs since I have every command tied to a unique hotkey with the exception of rarely used stuff like "Mark Mines". For those I just use the spacebar drop down system like in CMx1 and voila. The good news is it's very simple to change the hotkeys and took me all of 10 minutes.

I don't enjoy RT at all really and I imagine it could be very frustrating for anyone to be playing it that way. With wego you can take your time and work through the UI problems. Like you said not having moveable waypoints is very annoying (though BFC have acknowledged this IIRC and want to put them in at some point). On the flipside, CMBN has the ability to issue fire orders from waypoints that CMx1 did not which is VERY powerful.

And I agree about BFC being stuck in their ways. They really need to realize the importance of multiplayer especially (their argument that most do not play multiplayer is a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy I think, it's a wargame, I can't imagine anyone preferring to play against the computer rather than a human if given the choice).

Basically everyone who criticizes the game gets shut down on their forums. But I will say this, they stay true to their roots, they are not in any way dumbing down the game, and they DO patch their games and continue to make improvements.

Even with BFC's faults, CMBN is simply the best tactical level wargame out there IMO, though I still play CMBB when I want enormous Ostfront battalion size battles.

In short, the UI was unbearable until I changed the hotkeys to all-unique ones and the spacebar functionality was put back in (I'm pretty sure it was not when CMSF at first came out though it's been a while)

I know there is a thread for it but what is like to to order the new Combat Mission over seas? Its VERY tempted to get it but they don't store your downloads like steam does and I have no idea how much the import charges are. I had so many good memories Combat Mission 2 (it had the badass Soviet Navy Infantry in it :D) and I did like the Demo of the newer one but I was a bit turned off by Strike Force, so is it worth paying the bit extra?
