Totally agree. This is an epic wargame that's had me gripped since it came out. Loads of mods from the community to make it look better also. There is a Commonwealth add-on to be available soon.
My only criticism is that it's a bit pricey but well worth it IMO.
Another +1 on CMBN.
I had many issues with the new engine at first, but BFC have made many improvements and now there are only a few outstanding issues. The lack of tcp-ip wego being the main one (though if you can find an opponent willing to sit down and play a whole match through you could just use dropbox or something similar and have something nearly as good)
Anyone who likes serious WW2 games should enjoy it tremendously. There's basically nothing else like it out there. Pretty much the ultimate wargame for me.

Problem with CMBN is that the devs are deaf to constructive criticism and they have *very* vocal fanboy group that will shout down anyone saying the game needs serious work. Well, actually game itself is fine but the UI is horrible. It makes gameplay feel more like work than fun. You do not have even basic tools like listing of units under your command. It's just as easy just to hunt down Lt Winters. And the waypoint system, they cannot be moved and the system is very unforgiving with precision clicks required or you're dumped back to beginning.
My favourite counter is that anyone criticizing the UI (which is worse than CMBB) should play C64 strategy games, that's bad UI. They also introduced as a default a total abortion of hotkey system which apparently mimics some US CnC device that overloads every button (of 9-key keypad) with multiple functions depending on context.
Yech. It's a good game struggling to get out of that horrible interface. I really hope they stop listening to the lifers who are few but fanatic and revamp it for the next release.
About the UI, it was an enormous turnoff to me too (this was back when CMSF first came out---I shelved that game after a few hours dealing with the UI and the -at the time- horrid pathfinding), but with custom hotkeys I entirely skip the need to use the various tabs since I have every command tied to a unique hotkey with the exception of rarely used stuff like "Mark Mines". For those I just use the spacebar drop down system like in CMx1 and voila. The good news is it's very simple to change the hotkeys and took me all of 10 minutes.
I don't enjoy RT at all really and I imagine it could be very frustrating for anyone to be playing it that way. With wego you can take your time and work through the UI problems. Like you said not having moveable waypoints is very annoying (though BFC have acknowledged this IIRC and want to put them in at some point). On the flipside, CMBN has the ability to issue fire orders from waypoints that CMx1 did not which is VERY powerful.
And I agree about BFC being stuck in their ways. They really need to realize the importance of multiplayer especially (their argument that most do not play multiplayer is a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy I think, it's a wargame, I can't imagine anyone preferring to play against the computer rather than a human if given the choice).
Basically everyone who criticizes the game gets shut down on their forums. But I will say this, they stay true to their roots, they are not in any way dumbing down the game, and they DO patch their games and continue to make improvements.
Even with BFC's faults, CMBN is simply the best tactical level wargame out there IMO, though I still play CMBB when I want enormous Ostfront battalion size battles.
In short, the UI was unbearable until I changed the hotkeys to all-unique ones and the spacebar functionality was put back in (I'm pretty sure it was not when CMSF at first came out though it's been a while)
