  • Half-Life 1. Granted only one ending is valid, but still the choice is there. Few games give you the option of a "death of main character" ending.
Most games give you this option.:p

As far as great twists go, the one in Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath is one of my favorites. It's not a brain-twister, but it's very surprising and it has a point! It's not just a twist for a twist's sake like, say, the ending in the rubbish 2001 Planet of the Apes movie. I hate those.

knights of the old republic 1, didn't see the twist comming.

Mass effect 1 story was good but I disliked the fact I couldn't join the other side like in Kotor. I was constantly thinking to myself "Hey evil alien guy, you are right, I want to join you, oh wait I can't, let me just ask you some neutral questions then, oh wait I have to say the angry things too".

Prey's story was unoriginal (aliens abduct you, your grandfather and your gf) but the story is present most of the time because the main character talks to himself alot

Spoiler[and sometimes goes to a ghost world to talk to his dead grandfather. I was genuinly sad when I had to fight his gf that was turned into a giant monster]Spoiler.

I just couldn't get over how stupid and useless a spirit bow and arrow was stacked next to sick alien technology.

Hmmm, I really haven't played those sorts of games, the closest I could come up with would be "American McGee's Alice" which I never finished due to a hard drive crash...

here to kill your monster
i finished alice, there was nothing really complicated about it, just a gothic antidisney take that i imagine is similar to the new Burton film.
The deal was something like alice being haunted because her parents died in house fire or thereabouts but i cant remember if that was mentioned early on near the end.
What that game did have however was a top class soundtrack

Was I the only one who knew what the Citadel was early in the game?

I guessed it right. :p

I don't think I guessed the -exact- nature of the Citadel, but because writers are generally lazy* or maybe because I'm SMRT, anytime something like the Citadel is in a story, you know there is -something important- about it.. just because people appearently get irrate if you flesh out details that are not significant to the current story.

*I know they aren't really lazy, it's prob more that there scoping issues, etc.

Silent Hill 2 gave me some sort of positive "Wait, what?" reaction the first time I finished it. Penumbra : Black Plague actually made my smile because the last part of the narration regarding the ending was very grim in several ways. The whole story taking Overture into account is somewhat silly regarding few aspects, but like the old Silent Hills the storytelling was brilliant and the ending was interesting and grim at the same time.

I just remembered another hilarious "what the eff, enough with the surprise twists already" ending! Although in this case it's brilliant satire:
No One Lives Forever

I was pretty confused by the Overture ending, I finally found my Russian friend and he's like "By the way, I locked myself in an incinerator" and then I have to turn the damn thing on.
