You should not have lost any of your character progress because Steam has that all saved.

Has the game always been like this?
Have you verified your game cache?

Perhaps someone else can offer suggestions

How much RAM do you have? Usually if you are seeing high hard drive activity it is due to free RAM running out and the system having to swap thing in and out of the swapfile. It could be if you were previously almost at the limit that the new models have pushed the memory usage just a bit too far for the amount of RAM installed.

Kingstone 4ghz DDR3
Ati Radeon 5770 HD 1Gb
Thermaltkae TR2 550W

All my games run very well, and i have a lot of them that require more powerful pc: I don't think all lack of hardware is the problem. I'm really clueless right now, the only thing worth mentioning is that I have a similar problem with TF2 but it happens less frequent about 1 time per session, and I'm not sure if its the same or is the lag, but sometime it freezes (less time, about 1 -8 sec) just like Kf then it resume playing.

PD: the freze in TF2 just happen when playing but in KF happen in menu browsing server in game is just random. I dont know if they are related but i think both use source?

I have this problem too. Only after the update, no problems prior to the update. I will get a random freeze for 10 seconds or so. I can tab out sometimes and task manager says "Program not responding".

But after 10 seconds, everything will resume fine.

I thought i was the only one having this problem but it seems that im not. Thank god! i was going crazy. Maybe altogether we can find a cause and a solution.

I've been having this trouble 2 months ago or so and it is basically the same as the other posters described: game freezes suddenly for 20+ sec (it can happen in any menu at any time of the game) making it impossible to play. If this happens during solo playing everything stops (music, mouse movement, wave time...) and resumes from that exact point (i dont get killed). In multiplayer it usually means death because server info does keep running.

I have also observed a high CPU usage during those freezes (50). This has never happened to me in this game before. In fact this does not happen in any other of my steam games. But no other significant thing i could mention.

I have tried everything that came up to my head: uninstaled 3 times in a row (deleting every file in KF folder), changed graphics, resolution, minor options..., checked firewall, AV... none of that have worked for me.

I hope there is someone out there who can help us.

Possible fix?

Possible fix?

For some time I've had this problem too. The game randomly froze for several seconds from the very start and even in menu. And this begun before the x-mas update, possibly somewhere around the previous one - haven't played much since mid-autumn, so not sure about when exactly it started.
During freezes used memory didn't change, but CPU dropped from 40-50% to 0. And after the end of that it went back up again.
I've tried verification of game files, freeing some disk space and playing with video and sound settings, but without any success. So I tried one more thing that helps sometimes: lowering the level of hardware acceleration (display settings - advanced - troubleshoot tab). I've moved the slider just one level down from the max. After that during the next start screen with TWI logo I didn't get the usual freeze. I've waited in menu for a while - and again, no freezes, although before there would be at least one. Haven't tried to actually play yet, but it seems that the problem is fixed.

My freezing is just like this on an XP computer, but not in the menus. In a Vista one it's the other way around.
Plus i have troubles connecting to servers on XP, mostly those running the new official map. Plus maps load up slow, real slow. I haven't got any loading issues (server or map vise) since Tripwire fixed the load hanging some time ago. But now the problem has returned.

I've been getting this issue post-Christmas patch myself.

Except for me it's worse because if the game freezes for 10+ seconds, I'll get disconnected from the server. The game doesn't realize this but the server will no longer have my session logged in. Basically once the game freezes, I'm practically unable to alt-tab out or kill it from task manager because takes the screen's priority so I'm unable to force kill KF.

Core i5 750
ASRock P55 Extreme
4GB of ram then 12GB (never took out the original 4GB after getting another 8GB)
4GB paging file
GTX470
Win7 x64 with all latest updates.
Logitech keyboard + mouse software if that matters

Currently Killing Floor and Titan Quest are the only two games that do this to me. This being intermittent freezing where the game doesn't respond and I get disconnected.

Edit: I did forget to mention that this seems to happen after playing for a maybe an hour or so and the game does eventually recover after the some, I'm gonna say, at least 20 second freeze. But after it recovers I'm already disconnected from the server although my client doesn't see that. It's almost as if you've gotten a huge lag spike and the game is waiting for data but never receives it. And for clarification my game doesn't crash when I get these freezes.

Sadly, decreasing hardware acceleration level didn't work. Still got the same freeze at the very TWI logo and later ingame too upon the next start. I also tried to switch KF graphic acceleration from Direct3D 9.0 to Direct3D, and didn't get a freeze ater restarting, but got one again next time. And all variants gave at least one freeze during playing solo. So, the problem still remains, though what I've tried so far seemed to reduce menu freezes. But that might also be a coincidence.
Actually, those freezes remind me of the similar problem KF had a while back and which has been fixed. But then the background growls of Specimen stayed looped. Freezes now usually kill the sound completely.

I've had this problem ever since I got KF in the summer and it feels like it gets worse with every update. [EDIT3: It's probably because I leave for a while and forget how bad it was before. If it really did get noticeably worse each time it would be unplayable by now, which it is not.]

Fiddling around randomly with the precache and audio settings sometimes helps? Not sure.

EDIT: Jesus merciful christ what did Vista do to the pagefile... not sure if that's got anything to do with what I'm experiencing but here's trying to fix it.

EDIT2: So I found this page and turned those precaching-related options off too, on top of turning on CheckOverflow and reducing my resolution to 640x480. Seems to help a bit.
