A game mechanic that I really enjoyed in Battlefield:Vietnam (2004) was the ability to "Heli Lift" other vehicles through the jungle.
The way this worked was that you hovered above a vehicle from your team, then you pressed a button which lowered a chain that attached to the vehicle.
You were then able to lift the vehicle and transport it across the map.

This allowed your team to move heavier vehicles across the map faster. It also added more depth to the pilot role of the Huey.
Transport Missions:
The "Heli Lifting" game mechanic could be expanded with "Transport Missions".
This means to add the ability for the driver of the vehicle to request transport.
The pilot(s) see that request and can respond to it.
Once the vehicle has been hooked up, the pilot sees where the driver wants to get transported to. And the pilot gets rewarded for accomplishing that transport mission.
This would add a lot more depth to the pilot role, and it's value. It would also encourage players to focus on fullfilling the role of a pilot during the entire match.
