hate how people diss something just because it doesn't work for them, i've owned alot of servers and PB and VAC have both worked excellent, the players also need to realise, that sometimes files on PB can be blocked by firewalls/AV's, which causes kicks and/or lag.

VAC has never been "enough". Look at Counter Strike/TF/DoD (all of them). You would have to understand how VAC works to even make this statement. It is completely possible to trick or sidestep VAC 99.9% of the time with simple file modifications as it is not a real time kick/ban (hackers have done this for years). Punkbuster looks for inconsistencies in real-time and though it has some kinks (until worked out), it provides a better player experience while you are actually playing the game.

Who sits around going "I wonder if VAC ever got around to banning that guy last week after he joined my server and made everyone leave?" You were still impacted that night. I like instant kick/ban results and PB does that.

Pretty much this, I help admin some DOD servers and VAC does nothing at all to stop cheats however PB won't help either. As i've said somewhere else it'll all be down to hard working admins.

^ agreed, servers need smart admins, not admins that buy it than just join and play without knowing how to use the anti cheat.

Then there would be isolated cases. On the Tripwire server all 64 players had the same problem and the high pings.

Yep, i want to play RO2 so badly, but the lag is just horrible and everyone has 200+ pings.

I just brought up the game to see and my ping appears normal (23 or so on up)...perhaps they fixed it?? One thing I did notice is it seemed to default put the highest ping servers first..once I sorted it I was able to see the low ping servers...not sure if that had anything to do with what people are seeing because it can be confusing (since we're used to the other way around.)

To those who say VAC isnt enough,

I've played over 1,000 hours of Team Fortress 2. I have seen 0 noticeable hackers. True, someone might've wall hacked or aim boted that I didnt notice in all those hours, no noticed hacks in over 1,000 hours says a LOT.

I played CoD:MW2 on a free weekend and saw about 8 hackers and was subject to a hack that maxed my levels.

It depends on who plays the game and if the Devs care. TW and the RO community cares.

yeah I had some ping spikes at the beginning of rounds last night, especially on Pavlov's House, but they settled down into more normal ranges within a minute. maybe a bit higher than they were, but definitely within the 'playable' range. mind you I've been playing on TWB's European servers for much of the last two years while living in Texas....so higher pings are something i was used to. and...I find that the netcode of RO is better than a lot of games. think of trying to play CoD4 or DoD:S with a 150 ping vs ROHoS with a 150 ping. GIANT difference.

it will get sorted out!

overall, after last night's patch, my fps is much more constant. i trust the server browser glitches will be worked out shortly. hell i was just glad to finally be able to see who was playing on a server and to sort by ping or # of players. wasn't that an improvement? and it's still a beta after all....c'mon guys....have faith!

Sorry to say but this seems really naive especially the 'TW and the RO community cares' bit. There have clearly been hackers in the games of TF2 you have played, maybe they weren't around for long due to good admins but it is stunningly easy to get around the VAC protection. VAC is nver enough.

200 ping.

OK, weapons in RO is not as accurate as in most FPS games. I love this.
You need to earn every kill. Killing a running target is immensley satisfying to do with a rifle.

But now, there's a delay between shot and the bullet hitting anything.
I can only hit targets that are standing still aiming.

Also, starting each map is godawful with the lag. Everyone's spazzing out and getting stuck in walls.

Of course, fix this and everything's well.

When I read about all those poroblems I'm thinking that it might not be that bad after all that polish boxed CE has been delayed until sep 19th. I hope that most of those showstoping bugs will be sorted out until then. See You Guys on battlefield in 8 days!

I warned you guys Punkbuster would be nothing but a source of problems, VAC is ENOUGH.

1) RO2 is still in beta
2) This is Tripwires first time using PB

The RO2 beta is a true beta not some stress test demo that EA calls a beta so there will be bugs. The main thing is Tripwire promptly fixes their game.

This was on the Valve mailing list so they are listening

Evenbalance has just released an update for Punkbuster that should address
the issues with the RO2 Beta Server getting lagged out on map changes. So
please if you have disabled Punkbuster re-enabled it on your server, then
restart your server to help us test the fix. Note: It may take 20 minutes or
so for Punkbuster to autoupdate and apply the update on the server. So you
may still see some lag for the first map change or two. After that the issue
should be resolved and you should no longer get big lag issues when maps
changes with punkbuster installed.

Please not you DO NOT have to update through HLDS, Punkbuster will update
itself automatically. When the update is downloaded and auto-installed, you
will eventually get a message in your log with the updated version numbers
that says:
Log: PunkBuster Server: PunkBuster Server for HOS (v1.834 | A1371 C2.275)
Enabled

If it says older version numbers the server is still waiting to download the
update, so just keep checking the log. I appreciate your patience while we
get these issues sorted out.

Thanks,

John Gibson

I wouldn't go as far as saying the game was unplayable. It's just not playable for long.
Between changing maps, changing teams, changing sides and getting kicked by PB, you are very lucky if you get a 5 minute match.

The biggest VAC issue is being completely useless

:p

The biggest Punkbuster issue is that it kicks out more non-cheating folks than it kick cheating folks.

Pick your poison, do you want a game with a very small amount cheaters, or a game where you are treated like a cheater?

You need punkbuster if you hope to have a very small amount of cheaters, even if punkbuster detection sucks, pbbans is awesome.

I've played punkbuster games for years and only got kicked couple of times cus it was outdated, big deal
