Hullo. First off, I know it's not directly related to RO, but this is the only these are the only peeps that I trust over some second-rate homebrew hardware site! I was just wondering if I can run a 333FSB processor on a 266FSB motherboard (that's as high as it will support) without damage to either component. I have ample cooling and always have, but I've never had such a damn time trying to find a chip in the right bus speed! I've never tried mixing speeds before, and was curious if it would work and what hitches (if any) I can expect. If you have experience with this please let me know, thanks!

Ok, excellent, thank you! That is what I had hoped would happen, but all this new fangled technology stuff got me confused *looks for his rocking chair* :p

Again, thank you for the clarification :)

Also your ram will be running at 266mhz instead of 333mhz. Btw bus speed is half of ram speed so a 133mhz FSB means a 266mhz ram speed, like I have a 220 FSB but my ram is running at 440mhz.

Unfortunately sir, this did not work :(

I'm looking at having to buy a new MB, but it needs to be fairly inexpensive (shouldn't be hard to find a cheap socket A board, right? :))

It is an Athlon XP 2600+ 333 FSB. My current mobo is an MSI k7t Turbo 2, bios version 3.6.

I've searched and searched, but on the official AMD site's list of 'recommended motherboards' I've had NO luck finding any of those for sale.

EDIT: Currently, I'm running an XP 1600 266FSB. So, the performance difference is something I just can't wait to taste! :)

that looks like a nice mobo. Dont quote me but I believe that the ram will only run as fast as it can run. So your mobo will support faster speeds but the ram will only run as fast as it can or as fast as the slowest piece of ram you have installed (lets say you have two sticks one is running at 333mhz and the other is running at 266mhz, both sticks will only be running at 266mhz). But again dont quote me, Id try out www.computerforum.com and ask them to double check.

Ok, cool. According to that site's 'RAM 101' sticky, it's more or less mobo dependant on if you can run slower speed next to faster ram. Some mobos are picky as to whether or not they let it happen. I think I'm going to have to take the chance, and if it doesn't work I'll just have to upgrade the ram in a few weeks when I can. Thanks for the help, and most definately for hte link! awesome site :)
