Hi
I'm using the Steam version of Killing Floor and finding it impossible to start in full screen
sad.gif

I sometimes manage to get past the Tripwire logo, but will hang in the menu.
Most of the time it will instantly freeze after the splash screen.

At first I thought it was the Steam GameOverlay, but after about 30ish system lockups and reboots, I've narrowed it down to Full Screen mode.

 • tried Crossfire on/off
 • installed fresh ATI drivers 10.10e and also tried 10.11
 • deleted killingfloor/system + re-downloaded and verified
 • deleted killingfloor.ini/user.ini
 • tried Alchemy/OpenAl/system driver updates etc.
 • secondary monitor enabled/disabled
 • D3D9Drv and D3DDrv both cause lockups
Please, there must be some way to play fullscreen!
I own 100+ games, and they all function in fullscreen!
I'm all out of ideas

It's a complete system lock.
Everything freezes, the only way to get out of it is to physically reboot the PC.
Everytime the freeze happens, KillingFloor.ini, KillingFloor.log and trip_postfx.log all either corrupt or write 0kb files.

There's no errors reported in Windows Event Viewer, no BSOD and no minidumps generated.

Had a look through the forum for possible fixes and found all these threads that have system lockups in Fullscreen:

None of them have any solutions, people just stop posting/give up or ask for a refund :\
I've tried some more stuff:

 • Ran chkdsk on both the OS drive and Game drive - no errors at all.
 • Ran sfc /scannow on the OS drive, it's all correct.
 • Directx is up to date.
 • Everything is wonderfully defragged.
 • No firewall/antivirus software.
 • Only basic/default Microsoft services are running - all other applications are closed.
Is there any form of debugging software I could use to try and track down the problem?

UPDATE:
Tried running KF via my spare sandbox installation of Win7 x64 (ATI 10.4 drivers) and it worked!
Ironically that OS is full of random installs, services, clutter and crap :\

Here's an interesting line from the .log info
[Using the old ATI 10.4 drivers]
Log: atiu9pag.dll/ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series

[Using the current ATI 10.11 drivers]
Log: aticfx32.dll/ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series
-

So now I'm going to try ATI 10.4 on my current system.
Log: atiu9pag.dll/ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series
Result: ATI 10.4 works fine!

Drivers 10.5
Log: aticfx32.dll/ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series
Result: ATI 10.5 works fine!

Drivers 10.6
Log: aticfx32.dll/ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series
Result: Lock up in fullscreen

Drivers 10.7
Log: aticfx32.dll/ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series
Result: Lock up in fullscreen

Drivers 10.9
Log: aticfx32.dll/ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series
Result: Lock up in fullscreen

Drivers 10.10e/10.11
Log: aticfx32.dll/ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series
Result: Lock up in fullscreen

Wait! ATI 10.12 is online! I'll try them :3
Log: aticfx32.dll/ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series
Result: Lock up in fullscreen

So the last 'working' driver was Catalyst 10.5 [26th May 2010]
Are there any XFX BE 5970 2GB users experiencing any similar problems with the newer drivers?

Who can fix this, Tripwire or AMD?
What I really don't understand is why every other 3D application/game I own is able to function just fine with newer drivers

try putting the driver dll's from the working driver in the killingfloor systme folder and then just install a newer driver. It will use those dlls then.

Hmm, I'll try it!
Expanded ATI 10.5 aticfx32.dll into killingfloor/system - booted up and it crashed on the splash with Critical Error dialog -
IDirect3DIndexBuffer9::Lock failed(80070057).

So I expanded ALL ATI 10.5 dll's etc. into killingfloor/system - booted up and it locks the system up.

Also, for the first time, using the 10.12 drivers managed to write a KillingFloor.log!

what happens when you completely disable the catalyst AI in the catalyst control panel?, meanwhile ill try to see if I can find someone with more experience with ATI drivers for ya.

Make sure that when using the latest driver for your videocard that your directx revision is up to date as well, for some weird reason it doesn't get updated with windows update yet if you run a new driver with an old directx revision often issues can occur within ue2.5 games.

If that doesn't work try changing your renderer to openGL for the time being or use an older driver. Follow this guide but then instead of the direct3d renderer enable the openGL one. http://forums.tripwireinteractive.com/showthread.php?t=30754

Okay, re-downloaded and installed the latest runtime, directx_Jun2010_redist.exe
Disabled both Catalyst AI and Vsync in CCC.

Tried the different render modes again;
RenderDevice=OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice
Got into the menus fullscreen, some of the UI was white/missing/corrupt.
Got into a server, worked for a couple of minutes, then KF just froze mid game. Was able to taskman/end task though

RenderDevice=D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice
Since the update it seems I can get into the menus with Fullscreen! Connected to a server and as soon as the 3D world loaded on screen, it locked up the system.

Enabled this again, Setting it to Fullscreen via the .ini instead of the ingame menu, and now it loads up Fullscreen fine!
I'm in the menus!
Connected to a server, it finished loading and I was at the character select screen.
It was playing the London's Finest DLC in the little video box, and I could see the Level underneath the menus.
At this point the audio was going crazy, lagging and distorting, and the mouse was also lagging in little pauses.
After about 10 seconds of this the system locked up.
(I own an X-Fi card w/ EAX, but all game Audio settings are set to whatever the default options are)

Also, since the Xmas update, I can't Solo anymore - there's no maps listed and I'm unable to start a game?

if there are no maps listed then you will probably have some corrupt ucl or upl files (always mix em up).

So even though you did so in the past, manually delete your KF system folder, and then verify the integrity of the game cache.

I can't even get the game to load at all anymore.

All I get is the following since the update.

Build UT2004_Build_[2004-11-11_10.48]

OS: Windows NT 6.1 (Build: 7600)
CPU: GenuineIntel PentiumPro-class processor @ 2653 MHz with 4095MB RAM
Video: No Video

Can't find 'ini:Engine.Engine.GameEngine' in configuration file

History: UObject::SafeLoadError <- UObject::StaticLoadClass <- InitEngine <- FMallocWindows::Free <- FMallocWindows::Free

I have tried reinstalling the whole game, just the system folder delete, verifying the game, none of it works.

well in this case your redorchestra.ini for sure is corrupted. So I would try to delete the system folder once again and verify the integrity of the game cache. Perhaps you will get another error afterwards. But the current error you get is due to some corrupt data.

Yes! You are correct, some how the ucl files got corrupted.
I think all these system hard locks are slowly corrupting my raid array

leondres, which graphics card are you running?

Someone else with a 5970 that cant get past driver 10.4 too:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1662386
It's definitely not just me!

Tried the 10.12a hotfix drivers just outta boredom, and no, still won't work.

Damn Tripwire, I've owned this game since May'10 and now that I've got time to play it, I'm unable to. Looks like I'll be missing the xmas event too
ugh.gif

I even bought all your DLCs to show my 'support' to the developer... yet there's no support given to me
sad.gif

I've spent 3 days uninstalling/reinstalling drivers, messing about with .ini's, dll's and thrashing the hell out of my RAID array due to all the system lock ups...
there's nothing more I can do.

Fixed it!

Fixed it!

I've done a system wide disabling of ATI/AMD's Ultra Low Power State feature.
Open up regedit, find and replace all REG_DWORD entries of "EnableUlps" from value "1" (0x00000001) to "0".

No more system lockups and 100% fullscreen!
Thank you to everyone who helped in this thread!

And Tripwire, thank you for all your hard work, effort, awesome suggestions and general support in helping to fix this issue! :troll:
