Not the biggest deal in the world but you guys have nailed the Sniper scopes right on the money. It always amazes me year after year seeing all of these top of the line commercial FPS games being released that just continue to use the same old Texture overlay fake looking scope effect on sniper rifles. I loved when I first found out about RO the look of the sniper scope, and now it looks even better.

Why can't other companies take a lesson from this and start looking for new ways of actually creating a more realistic looking scope?

I would like to see a better looking binocular view though as well.

Other companies take care of money and general trends only - what is better selling. When "Other companies" remove dedicated servers and put 10000 unlocks into game, TWI take care of customer and upgrade their products adding as you mentioned great features ;)

The only other games that I have ever seen this sort of upgraded scope method in so far since the release of RO were: Insurgency Modern Infantry Combat(another mod, mod for Source engine) and a more recent game Splinter Cell Conviction had a more advanced looking acog scope.

2010, texture overlay style scopes should be done away with by now.

While the ocular shadow and refraction effects would be nice, you can't really do a 3D binocular model.

Here's why. With binoculars, you typically hold them right to your eyes (unlike scopes, I believe). So you wouldn't see the binocular model anyway. Plus, binoculars have "bi" in them because you look through both eyes. How do you model looking through both eyes on a monitor where the left eye sees the left part of the model and the right eye sees the right part of the model. If you split the difference and go for the middle, you'll be looking into the bridge, which wouldn't be too helpful. You could do it with a stereoscopic 3D display, but still it's unnecessary, since you typically hold them right up to your eyes, loosing peripheral view.

One movie cliche we seem to be stuck with is the side by side double circle view. Really, it should be one big circle, but it's sort of a waste of screen space, especially on a wide view monitor. An ocular shadow would look best on the circle, though.

I was pretty blown away by the scope effects as well, having been a shooter my whole life, it was impressive to finally see some of these effects being used properly. Of course, there is a lot about HoS that has blown me away.

well thanks guys you made me need to pull my old ussr binoculars and go out side a almost 4am.

Its been so long since iv looked through binoculars, what id like in the game is focus adgustment, more scratches on hero binoculars, dust specks and dirt that can be wiped off.

it would be intersting to try to simulate eye lashes, blinking and a negetive affect from looking at the sun.

im not sure on the age but of the 5 old ussr binoculars iv look through all had a yellew tinge. maybe that could be something the russian one have, and on that note i think it would be nice if the the view was based on models used be each side. im guessing they did not use that same model?

sorry to go kinda off topic but im wondering will anyone be able to pick up binoculars when the commander dies?

I don't think blinking needs to be simulated, as the player already blinks. That would just double the blinking. I know a blink looks different through the binocs, but I don't think it'll be worth it.

I like your idea's, but the one i don't like is the eyelashes and blinking. But for the rest, good idea's!

You shouldn't be able to see your character's hands in detail, as that would imply the binocs being held 10cm from your eyes. Actually, the black overlay for the binocs is quite accurate. Maybe blur the edges so you still have a bit of peripheral vision.

true it would be more just a blur of colour, anyway the amout of peripheral vision would depend on the binoculars them selves. its not really about the vision for me though, just seems alot better than an overlay.

Adding the refraction is the biggest thing, and a spectrum of color around the edges where the lights hits the lens

Well, that too, changing of focus when looking at things at greatly varying distances would be a great touch

The need to focus brings up an interesting point. On my camera lens, there's a focal distance meter. Meaning, when I focus at a certain point, if I look at the side of the lens, I can gauge the distance of the object I just focused on.

Did military binoculars of the era have anything similar? That might be useful for ranging your target.

Honestly though, with a camera lens (and likely a binoc lens), precision drops off with distance sharply.

i fixed it up, can someone pm about to post a pic without it being an attachment.

I imagine it would be hard to get it looking right as you took them away from your eyes unless the animation was very fast.
