Forests and Woodland

The only gripe I have about the the very rich landscape we all run around in knocking each other off is the woodlands.

They are a bit Panzer Commanderish, in being a big block of trees that you cannot navigate through.

It would be great to be abble to drive your vehicle in to t a wooded area to hide it.

Older games such as Panzer Elite have sigle tree modeled forests etc. IS it the unreal engine that wont support this or will it kill the game from an MP perspective.

I await the relevant kicking for this small moan and apologise if I am being a dumb

I agree. The woodland in Arad you cant even walk through!

BRing in some forest maps. Russia has afair few forest you know ;)

Its the engine that cant handle it.
Well, you are able to make a forest map, but then your fps will be around 5-10fps or you will need some kind of supercomputer to run it.
The engine sadly wasnt buildt to handle forestmaps.
Even on big tankmaps (like arad) you have to lover the detail, to make it run decent on everyones machine.
So, as long as nobody makes good looking lowpolytrees (around50-60 polys!), you wont see any woodland/forestmaps in RO, sadly.:(

well i've seen forest maps (or swamp maps) done (and done well) with the unreal 1 engine. so it should be possible with the ut2k4 engine, you just need to get really creative.

also those maps where just forst that you couldnt get out off, and the tree's where pretty dense so you couldnt look verry far (limiting the amount of polys on your screen to something approuching acceptable)

p.s. there was also a custom map of a forest area for the mod, cant remember the name thou....

Are you refering to "ye olde" swamp map from Infiltration, Countes (got your cd yet?)?
That was pretty good but only usefull for an infantry only setting.
A combination of a blocks or unpassable patches of trees and some loose trees could work. Like in Vietcong.

Yes and 1 Sommer Offensive Map (Rueckzug ?) was also a Swamp Map with a nice amount of Trees, but the Map wasn't as big as Arad :).

There was an incredibly good looking custom map for the MOD called clearing that I discovered quite by accident once. The entire map was pretty small, but it was completely covered by forest terrain that looked absolutely fantastic. Lots of large trees, rocks, and undulating terrain. The only cap zone was a clearing in the center of the map, which didn't exactly make for exciting gameplay, but the point is, the map itself was absolutely beautiful.
