Go to "my documents/my games/redorchestra2/ROGame/config/" and open ROEngine.ini.

Search for ISVhacks, and change:

[Engine.ISVHacks]
bInitializeShadersOnDemand=false to true

Note that the location of this file has changed slightly since the start of the beta.

This can reduce map load time from 1-2 minutes to under 30 seconds.

Also make sure you have the most up to date drivers for your graphics card.

It's not a dangerous setting to change, it essentially does what it says in the code line, instead of initializing shaders at startup, it does it as and when they're needed.

Changing this single preset actually fixed my crashes (originally the game would crash to desktop right after connecting to a server). After the patch, the location of the inis changed and the crashes returned :/ . I flipped the setting to "true" and CTDs were gone again. I wonder why that affects the game's stability for me...

bInitializeShadersOnDemand=false fixes artillery lag
bInitializeShadersOnDemand=true fixes crashes when loading Barracks or Pavlov

I guess you can't have it all. :p

Damnit I wondered what was causing that horrible stuttering on artillery. It's obviously a weirdly implemented artillery system.

This is pretty frustrating, I now need to have a trade off between insanely long map times, and a the stuttering on artillery.

i dont know why but after most recent patch this fix doesnt work for me anymore

Did you make sure you changed the ROEngine.ini in the my games/redorchestra2 folder? The most recent patch change the install location from the my games/unrealengine3 folder to the new one.
